Growing local

It started when I made some chutney - or - what the hell is in my fridge?

I found some apples that weren't looking their best today.  After a bit or work, I ended up with three bottles of chutney.  One of these bottles went in the fridge - where I immediately bumped into an existing bottle of "paw paw, tomato, zucchini, and date chutney."

"Oi Roz.  Where the hell did we get this paw paw chutney?" I yelled.

My Roz says, "Sophie made it.  You got it at Christmas."

"Oh, that explains the sauerkraut bottle beside it!"

Anyways, that got me looking around the house to see what other homemade good gear we had lying about (that I may or may not have forgotten).

Here's the list of what I discovered:

  • Cheese - blue and ricotta.
  • Bread rolls - white dinner.
  • Two batches of pale ale - one American and one Australian.
  • Liquors - lots of different flavours.
  • Rum - Jamaican and dark.
  • Gooseberry jam.
  • Kumquat marmalade.
  • Today's apple chutney.
  • Sweet chilli jam.  I found one older jar that is as spicy as heck - forgotten about that one!
  • Kombucha scoby.
  • Red wine vinegar (9 damn liters of it!)
  • Sourdough starter.

I'm almost sure I'll find some more stuff tomorrow.

I wasn't meaning there was stuff that had to be chucked out.  I couldn't believe how much good gear was in there that I had forgotten about!

For lunch I enjoyed pork chipolatas on my bread-rolls with Sophie's sauerkraut and homemade BBQ sauce.  Jeez it was nice.

Dianne - I used 600 mls yesterday making chutney.  Somebody will also get a bottle at our Xmas this year. LOL. (corrected the mls used from 60 to 600).

If you use all  the vinegar and do not make more you will realize its  better to have too much  .

Andy I think we have all been there, a day when we open the fridge and stand back and say, "Oh, my God, this needs a good clean out", and a week later I do it. It can be you find a Science Experience or that bottle of something you knew you hadn't finished but didn't know what happened to it.

What are you going to do with all that Red Wine Vinegar? Are you going to bottle something in it?
