you pick them when they are just starting to soften and go a little yellow , then the calyx starts to come away from the stem - sort of stands up! and let them ripen inside for up to 5 days - need to be very squishy to eat
How do you know when to pick them? I have some on my tree but no clue about when they could be ready.
thats interesting Doug - ours are just finishing here though not too worried as our neighbour has one and theirs is just coming into ripeness now - our avocados were opposite we have finieshd theirs but we have just started to pick ours - mind you our loquats- we two seeds grown from same tree and one is nearly finished and the others will be two weeks at least !
Fabulous pickings, I have never tried the Chocolate Fruit one day I hope to try it. Lucky you having Avocados.
Yeah Mary-Anne I know its not a pouteria and thats its known as many chocolate names. In the past when given to people the first comment is that it doesnt taste like chocolate, and as I am getting old and grumpy I just say ' try this its black and squishy'
I try to get through most of ours, mine are just starting to be ready and will eat them for a couple of months.
Doug when we were in Mexico / Honduras ( the home we were told it is known as chocolate pudding fruit because its the consistency of chocolate mouse rather than the taste of chocolate . And just for your information though you probably know sapote in one of the central American native languages means soft edible fruit - thats why there are so many sapotes that have no close relationship.
Fantastic. Your garden needs not be too perfect, then we can all feel okay about our own shortcomings lol.
July is still garden visit free. If you picked a time and let Dianne know, she'd help you organise it. They are actually not much work and lots of fun.

Hello Valerie, more than happy for visitors.
Great harvest! Cheryl, how about a garden visit? It looks like you have an interesting community around you. Funny how taste can vary between people. I recently has my first taste of taro and absolutely hated it. Which is just fine by me as it takes too much space to grow. You live and learn. Not a great fan of black sapote as I think, as a bit of a chocoholic, I indeed had the unrealistic expectation of chocolate taste and was put off by the texture. I will take avocado and passion fruit any day. I wish the possoms or cockatoos (who knows) wouldn't eat the vine though.
