Since we grow on the Vetiver in water we also grow Azolla to keep the mosies down.
Now with so much of the Vetiver gone we have these luscious looking shallow ponds covered in green.
Somewhere to grow kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica)and keep the Striped Marsh Frogs happy.

The lake I walk around everyday (Forest Lake) is smothered in Azolla at the moment, no matter how many times the council clears it, it is back in a few days. There is a problem there, the Ducks and Water Hens are getting stuck in it and drowning trying to get out, we see feathers everywhere. When the council was filling their trucks with the Azolla last week I mentioned they could drop it off at my place to use as mulch but they wouldn't be in it.
Chooks love the stuff once they've tried it.

Vetiver grass helps to stabilise soil and protects it against erosion. It can protect against pests and weeds. Vetiver is also used as animal feed. (Wiki.)
GrowVetiver is a plant nursery run by Dave & Keir Riley that harvests and grows Vetiver grass for local community applications and use. It is based in Beachmere, just north of Brisbane, Australia.
