How it all started

For one week every month my son and I go on a vegan diet. There are many political, environmental and ethical reasons to go vegan, all of which I more or less agree with until it becomes propaganda. For me, to hear that my 13-year-old had concerns and wanted to eat more vegetables was reason enough. A chance to steer clear from my die-hard habits of eating mostly meat bread and dairies is also extremely attractive. And so begins the adventure of finding interesting plant based dishes without the temptation of overtaking them with cheese and meat.

Soy products usually figure in non-meat diets as do Avocados. Mushrooms are a good substitute yet there are those who are allergic or like my partner, just don't like Mushrooms. As much as I love Avocados, so many in the raw or alkaline diets cannot be good. Too much of anything is not good really. Take the middle path and all that. All of these diets (Raw, Vegan, Alkaline) have a lot going for them yet even we retired old boilers find the time involved is lengthy and tedious. I really don't have an answer except to do as much of each of them as I can and not stress over it.

I did not like the amount of soy/tofu we went through the first time we did so I tend to focus more on beans, lentils and pulse. I vary the grains a lot too. I often substitute with what's available in my pantry with a balance to achieve the right texture. I must admit I would struggle to do it full time for the time being, at least until I am comfortable with not creating any deficiency.

Oh good! I subscribe to the ideals yet find it tricky to practice. Although I have a 'ton' of vegan recipes I have not tried any yet. The biggest hurdle for me is the long list of ingredients and the amount of time in preparation. Same issues apply to Alkaline and Raw diets too. Tried all three yet have not committed to any of them. Yet.
