I was asked the other day if I thought that the Queen Garnet Plum was the result of cross breeding the european plum with a Davidson's Plum. I answered, I don't believe so, due to the plants differing above the Order classification ... but I'm no biologist or botanist, so I really can't be sure what can be crossed these days (with no GE involvement).

The question did make me wonder whether the Davidson's contained any levels of 

anthocyanins, the antioxidant flavornoids that created all the buzz about the Queen Garnet. 

And the answer is yes, d. jerseyana contains almost 3 times the level of anthocyanins than a blueberry (RIRDC document in link below)

The Garnet Plum is reported to contain 3 to 6 times the level of anthocyanins than a blueberry. (nutrifruit document in link below)

I must point out that GP reference are Full Weight analysis and the DP references in the table below is a Dry Weight analysis, however the blueberry is a control in the below table, which is where I gained the 'almost 3 times' reference from.

Makes for interesting reading. I was only yesterday thinking of trying the Queen Garnet Plum, after seeing it on TV.

Looks like we missed the Garnets this year, I feel, partly due to the licensing, restricting and controlling the number of growers ... I'm guessing that the limited numbers help fetch the high price. At least the Qld Gov get a royalty percentage of the profits.

The suppliers weren't expecting the 40% down on last year's crop, so the restricted licensing in combination with the smaller crop made the plums come onto the market and disappear in a sneeze this year. I'm sure that corporate food machine has our health somewhere down it's list of priorities when restricting this plum. 

I often find it annoying when the media (who use the marketing information supplied to them, and usually only that information) hypes and supports a product under the sole banner of health for the humans, and almost fails to point out the 'more accessible alternatives' (elder berries and black currents) in the big headlines.

The juice was in Woolies a couple of times last year. Tasty enough but not something I'm hanging out for.

Well I will take good care of the Davidsons plum obtained from Daleys as a bonus plant. It would be good to know the levels of some of the native foods with their health benefits.   Rob, can you tell me how long they set fruit for, is it all at once or ongoing for a couple of months.

Thanks Phil, I recently updated some of the failed links (Syd Botanical Gardens reclassification). 

Christa, the North Qld (Pruriens) has its main fruiting time between May until September and can produce smaller crops at other times of the year. These trees can be dropping fruit whilst new batches are developing on the same tree. Usually a single bunch/clump of fruit on a tree will drop over a 3 week period.

The NSW (Jerseyana) has always been December to Feburary and usually 4 weeks of fruit drop for a specific plant with 2 larger productive weeks in the middle of the 4 week window, (there seems to be a little variance amongst the Jerseyana plant with exact times. I had a very poor Jerseyana crop this summer.

The 2 smooth (Johnsonii) have never produced fruit, however I'm guessing Johnsonii fruiting time would be similar to Jerseyana ... summer.

I will probably add the above to the blog sometime soon.

I coordinate a 3rd year BSc course on Bush Foods, and in one of the practicals we compared the antioxidant activity of Queen Garnet and Davidson plum.  Queen Garnett is high in water soluble and lipid soluble antioxidants - likely to be anthocyanins and carotenoids respectively, and the antioxidant activity of both fractions is high.  Davidson plum had the same antioxidant activity in the lipid soluble fraction (carotenoids), but less in the water soluble fraction that Garnett plum.  The students measured antioxidant activity with FRAP.

Thanks Melissa, it helps & confirms what the post suggests. What I'd please love to know, are the values in order to get a gauge of how much higher the Queen Garnet Plum is to Davidson Plum. Also, did the students do testing on the Kakadu Plum? I would love to confirm similar (and impressive) results found in the table at top.

There were many more (and better priced) Queen Garnet Plums in the shops this year. The real ripe ones were intensely delicious... being so tasty at any stage post purchase, resulted with only two or three making it to the very ripe stage.

I am writing this update, purely with hindsight over the past six weeks.

The following is just an observation, not a call at all.

Over the past 6 weeks, my weight has changed from 116kg to 96kg.

Foods, which I have eaten over the past six weeks in higher volumes than previous to six weeks ago are :

Brassicas from the home garden. (Predominately purple veined tree collards and cabbage).

Wasabi Leaves - 100s of + one stem ... avoided eating at night due to insomnia issues, LOL ... I actually ate some earlier tonight, so here I am!?!

Sweet Potato (Orange Orange).

Native yams (Approx. 1kg over 3 weeks).

Davidson's Plum (Approx 20kg, shared, over 6 weeks) .... Davidson's Plum Breakdown below ..... 

-DP Water (Many 10's of litres shared between four people, over six weeks) - One batch usually consisted of Four large freshly chopped plums, soaked in 2 litres of water overnight. I would usually add five teaspoons of sugar to 2 litres of water, and less on a re-soak. About one quarter of the 2nd's pulp was turned into a nectar. (must get better with these 2nd's as there is still plenty of colour in the skin).

-DP extra ripened pulp with skin (specially ripened to obtain higher sugar and less malic acid, making the raw fruit more palatable.... I am unsure if there is a decrease of anthocyanins as a result of this process). I alone would have consumed 2kg of this in the first four weeks.

-DP Jam (Approx. 10 teaspoons in 4 weeks) (45% sugar, probably not the best) (heating may decrease anthocyanins). It tastes so nice however.

-DP Wine, One bottle, Four weeks ago (Thanks Phil)

I also had the flu (I believe? ... no gastro issues during this time, however had low appetite and can attribute some weight loss to that time period)

I do not believe I have been more active during this time... not until this week, after recovering from the flu (last week) and simply found myself more active than I have been in a few years.  Today at 20kg loss, I have decided to post a record as honestly as possible.

One continuous observation that seems to be quite related to eating, is the occurrence of a 'fuzzy head' in the mornings (especially). When I get some fruit or solids into my stomach things are usually clearer... that's not usual for me, however, this effect or whatever does not seem to be increasing/worsening, just a newish thing.

There has been no accurate monitoring of exact food weights and volumes, so this is just an observation of weight loss and an approximation of the increased, more unique foods which I ate during the period of weight loss (up until today that is).

If this progresses on to unexpected weight loss, I will have a medical checkup, just to be safe. To date, I have been conscious (daily) of the variation in my diet over the past six weeks, so I'm not surprised I've lost some wight, just 20kg is a big one for me.

I think we all have seen too may miracle calls made, so please, please understand that I am not making any call, here, just observations of something that is out of the ordinary for me ... I have not been this weight in over Four years. I have enough plums to continue eating for another two or so weeks, I have slowed down on the Brassicaceae from the garden due to things drying out and being eaten.

Due to the subject of weight loss and diets being potentially and regularly dodgy, I will update this post in October with additional notes, whatever the changes.

Please note, no call has been made here other than I have lost weight, and separately, I have eaten stuff, apologies in advance, if you feel i have wasted anyones time with this post :)

You certainly haven't wasted your time. Thanks for the update Rob, it's great to hear from you. Congratulations on the weight loss, but do make sure you have that check up. As I don't have a Davidson Plum I think I will make sure to eat lots of Queen Garnet Plums when in season, perhaps it will work for me.
