Event Description

"FISH ON FLINDERS", 196 Flinders Pde, Sandgate

This is your opportunity to see Susanne's garden for the first time in the flesh!

Susanne's words:

Parking is available in the street.

My yard is on a slight downhill slope, it is flattish to walk though there is the occasional 'surprise!' depression from the chooks. The house toilet is inside which means at least 2 steps up to the deck and in.

I should have enough chairs but please bring your own if you want.

There are three native bee hives in the gardens around the yard and European bees in Langstroth hives in the chook yard. The European bees are in a back corner so are out of the way but can be viewed from a safe distance.

There are some ponds with water plants, most are non edible for us but some are bee and butterfly food sources and I chop up the bull rush for mulch.

In the middle of the front yard are half a dozen small beds with veg, herbs and flowers intermingled.

Along the fence lines are beds with butterfly, bee and bird food plantings with some fruit and veg for me squeezed in, changes with the seasons.

The front fence has red snake beans, Madagascar beans and passion fruit with a poor 'white table' grape I was gifted and the dog (no longer with me) chewed off at the base last year trying valiantly to fight its way through.

The back yard has some established fruiting vines and trees, the chook yard, bees and an enormous Jacaranda. The dragonfruit is taking over the garage. There is a wicking bed where I late planted my rosellas.

At the back door I have a couple of water well type raised gardens. There are compost tumblers up the backyard and open compost for the chooks to turn under the mulberry.  Under the mandarin I have other branches and grass clippings, the mandarin is sickly and pest stricken as it really struggles under the shade of the Jacaranda.

It is a vaguely permaculture style garden that is mostly left to itself. There is a lot of chicken wire used as 'borders' because the chooks and duck free range.

The driveway is a shambles presently as I am having a simple carport and pergola built and my pots and plantings are all over the place and the frangipani have been cut back.

I will enjoy having knowledgable folk here as many (5+) years ago I purchased some native trees for birds etc at a growers native plant sale at the Groverly TAFE. This last year a couple have really shot up and as I lost the tags I have no idea what they may be. No flower or fruit yet.

I really enjoyed sharing lunch after Daves garden visit and would like to do the same.

Children welcome but must be supervised by parents at all times.

Please bring a small plate of food or drink to share and any plants, produce or seed that you want to share, swap or sell.

RSVP required for the address to be sent closer to the date to the email address you nominated when you joined.

Late attendees welcome. Message Lissa or phone on the day for the address 0414445581.

Thank you Susanne for opening your garden... It was inspiring to me and I will be growing the beans ( forgot the name ) from the front fence.

Thank you Sophie for the lift, without which I would not be there.

Thank you James for the helpful tips on wine making and the sample of passionfruit Chardonnay . Glad I wasn't driving.

Thanks to all who generously gave seeds and plants.

I'll come early and bring those mugs :)

You'll hardly notice they are there :) They will just sit around, talk and eat the food they bring.

Between 20 and 26 people expected. I've made a lunch booking at Fish on Flinders for 20 but it is flexible.

Change of plans as I found out that Saturday won't work for me so I'm free now. Looks like there is going to be a large turn out - hope your garden can take it Susanne.

I've been reluctant to comment on our apparent site recovery until I get some real confirmation from the ning.  'Twould appear there are still some slight issues.
