Growing local

Enter the magical, miniature, exquisite world that I discover when it rains.

I did this video for an ABC Open project "Water Is ...". (abc.net.au/open) For me, water = rain = fungi.

When it rains for days on end the constant moisture creates the ideal environment for me to photograph fungi at its glorious best.

Find out more about the fungi in this video and my photography process in the blog "A man with a healthy fetish" by ABC Open North Coast producer Catherine Marciniak. https://open.abc.net.au/posts/a-man-with-a-healthy-fetish-60ht8ri/in/tags/botany

Look at a mushroom and think butter, salt and pepper ;-) The absolute importance in the cycle of renewal is overlooked. Anything that small could not be significant … yeah, right. Think of sub-microscopic bacteria and viruses to rid our thinking of that one.

There is an exquisiteness about super-small structures which macro photography (or a really good dissecting microscope) can bring to our notice. Some plant structures like Liverworts are superb under a light microscope and just breath-taking in their beauty.

May not be able to eat them but they are so important in the plant world and beautiful to look at. Little hidden gems :)

Just superb! So much more than the boring old field mushie.
