Profile Information

I am interested in:
Aquaponics - I have a set-up that is going pretty nicely at the moment. It has two grow beds and produces quality Jade Perch.

Fowl - I keep four lovely chickens for eggs only and Japanese quail that breed.

Australian Native Bees - I have a hive and hope to be able to increase the numbers of these Ozzie treasures.

Distilling - I make a fair variety of spirits and liquors. I make rum for me and liquors for others/gifts. However, I'm moving to the stage where I don't want to use bought flavours any more. So, I've taught myself to make a rum from burned raw sugar and molasses. I've also made unflavoured rum by fermenting molasses. I've turned out iced peach tea, plum, strawberry, cumquat, and passionfruit liquors. My home grown cumquat liquor seemed to be a hit at the local garden visits. Lately, I've made a foray into ginger beer which was proved very successful, and some fruit based wines.

Beer - I've done a few batches of simple package based beers now.

Cheese making - I've done a lot of cheeses, including marinated fetas with herbs I grow. My most frequent is my Purple Onion Feta. My favourite cheese is my Brisbane Nutty Blue, modeled after a blue Jarlsberg. I also do a Glasshouse Blue which is mild and creamy. I've done Camembert, raw milk blue, cheddar and quite a few others. These days, I stick to my favourite few, unless I am teaching.

Sausage making: I've do a nice Middle Eastern lamb, Thai chicken and Kransky. Loving the smoked sausages.

Jams/Preserves/Chutney - I do kumquat marmalade (home grown), chili jam (home grown) and a lot of others. I'm my preserves have reached the stage where they are entirely driven by what I grow myself.

Crazy scrap reuse - I've managed to grow shallots from tails, sweet potato from tops and tails, and chopped up and recycled old potatoes. Ginger goes pretty well from off-cuts as well. Oh, and of course the other recycle is to compost kitchen waste. I've now cut my garbage output by half. I also have a worm farm and make compost tea.

I like to bake breads and cook, especially where I am using my own produce.

I teach photography and cheese making.

Tiny farm tales... August 2019

Tiny farm tales...

I have 48 quail eggs in the incubator, on day 7 now. They have about 10-12 days to go. That’s left me with four dozen eggs for eating. That’s a thought process that I mostly leave alone. I also have four or five old birds that I can tell will drop off the perch soon. I lost one on the weekend. Nature says the old must pass so the new can come on. People aren’t any different, except the span of years Is greater.

I split a native bee…

Environmental warrior... or dirty old dumpster diver?

Am I an environmental warrior or just a dirty old dumpster diver?

Some folks would probably suggest that I am a tad over obsessed with climate change and living a life aimed at helping save the environment. There's some elements of that lifestyle which I normally don't talk about for fear of being labelled a dirty dumpster diver. But you know me - I'm gunna talk about them tonight!

I reuse and recycle a lot of wood and stuff. Why would I buy new stuff…

A late blogs... March/April 2019

April 2019

I have pumpkins coming in now (taking up a lot of room). I've planted spuds out too.  Lettuce seeds are growing but I'm not sure how valuable they'll be in winter - pesto sounds good.  Silverbeet are also doing well on the north.

There's a fair bit of citrus to harvest but the south side of the yard continues to die back.  No sun.  I've slowed down feeding the fish.  There's very few eggs from the chooks but the quails are still…

Tales from the Tiny Farm: November 18

Posted on November 25, 2018 at 0:11 6 Comments

Salad/veges: I've been trying to show a few pics of modest harvests each day (facebook posts). The idea is to explain that little bits each day add up. If I can make the odd meal from zucchinis then that's great. The same with eggs, tomatoes, silverbeet, lettuce or whatever. Rather than worry about making a whole meal once a week, I find it's better to contribute one thing or two to most dinners.

Fruit: tends to come in batches. I try to make jams, chutneys…
