Hi everyone,

Hasn't the weather been glorious - but definitely not cold enough for the start of winter.  I had the most wonderful day in the garden.  Started at 11 after helping at my son's school and didn't come back inside until 5pm.  I am feeling so relaxed and rejuvenated.  My gardening has stopped being a hobby and started to become a necessity.  With a couple of full on weekends away, a couple of late mid-week events + working late and I have been feeling very stressed over the last 4 weeks.  Today, I accomplished a lot but the most important was the destressing :)

It started with eating one of my still green tinged emperor mandarins - the first of 6.  My tree is still little but I got out there and ate it in the sunshine and it was still super sweet despite not being fully ripe.  So much better than the mandarins I bought from coles the other day.

I then did some watering and some powdery mildew spraying on cucurbits, roses and dahlia's.  I've started using eco-oil combined with eco-fungicide and it seems to do the trick. 

Next was transplanting all the cuttings I have accumulated from our wonderful garden visits.  Dianne's pink salvias are now in between lychee and mulberry, mushroom plant in the ground out the front.  Lissa's dragon fruit cuttings (from Dianne's visit also) are in two different places against the sunny side of my wooden fence.  And lastely, I picked up 2 cuttings from Lissa's 2 weeks ago and applied rooting powder and they have developed roots already.  But I have absolutely no idea what they are because stupid me thought I'd remember.  Any help with the ID of this please. 

Refreshed 3 of my small self watering pots and am trying to plant seeds into there and then into the garden to save time and space.  Into these, I have planted cauliflower, red cabbage, broccoli, pak choi, Leeks, spring onions, lettuces and spinach.  I'm still having trouble in a couple of beds with beetles so this way I can plant the seedlings into toilet paper rolls which will hopefully protect them.

I also moved a couple of bags of Tim's horse manure compost + coco peat into the back vegie beds to refresh them.  Into one, I've sown some bird seed as a green manure crop.  This bed was looking horrible before and has been very heavily used.  It only gets about 4 hrs sun in winter so figure it's the perfect time to feed it up and get it ready for summer.   Directly into the beds out the back, I have sown some beetroot, carrot, beans and peas. Here are the peas.

Not much in the way of produce at the moment.  Zucchini's, eggplants, rocket, spinach and lettuce is pretty much all I've got in the way of vegies.  I do have some sugar snap peas but as I planted these when I had my rat problem, I've only got 2 mature plants producing as I had to keep sowing extra peas as they would eat them.  It won't be long for some broccoli - if I can keep the diamond back moth caterpillars off them.  I've just bought another Eco product which has BT in it so am going to spray soon and see if it works as the heat is still allowing them to be very active.  Tomato plants just starting to produce tomato's - it will be a while until I am in tomato's again.

Daley's sent me a notice, my Walnut "placentia" was available.  It has been purchased and should arrive next week.  I have its spot in the park already picked out.  Hopefully in five years time, I'll be eating my own macadamia, pecan's and walnuts and if I have to share a few with people who work out what the trees are, well so be it - it will be worth it.  So far the council has been very accommodating - they have left a pumpkin vine that escaped and took root in the park and my pecan, to grow in peace.  My plan is to build a garden bed at the back of my fence for things such as pumpkins which I can no longer grow in the yard as it is too full.

Still reading...but the beetles you talk about Susan are they those little brown oval shaped cockroaches?

I've discovered that they don't like water. If I find an area where they are congregating I flood it. I'm also trying out the cockroach baits (pretty sure I showed you - the square jobs where they walk in and out again) and they do seem to be helping. I'm seeing dead roaches around the bed.

I get you completely re sitting in the sun in your garden eating something from your own plants. When life gets stressful I've found nothing compares to just walking around in the green, nibbling off this and that. Watching my bees come and go. Watching my snails enjoy the largesse I give them - I could hear one of them loudly munching last night.

You've got Sugar Snaps early. My plants are still slowly growing. Toms are just starting to produce a few flowers - I've bought some nice healthy Roma seedlings this year. I have a terrible track record with toms lol.

Would agree with Jan - that is a Cat's Whisker cutting.

Fingers crossed the council guys continue to leave your escaping garden in peace. If you keep the nuts away from paths where fallen nuts could eventually cause a slip hazard and complaints from the public they might be more inclined to turn a blind eye.
