Growing local

I recently heard a podcast (Stuff you should know) about the importance of growing local. It really does have an impact on both our health and the environment. Dental Insurance companies are seeing the benefit on your teeth. Doctors are finding a reduction in Heart Surgery among those who eat all local foods.
I have wondered if it would be possible to restrict our intake to food grown within 100 miles. We may miss out on some of our treats, but I would think this is possible.
With medical experts telling of the advantage, it is certainly worth looking into.

Food Connect source from within 5 hours of Bris which is about 500km I guess. The only non-local food that we eat is the dry processed stuff like pasta and rice, oils and butters, and meat (organic free range chicken tends to come from Victoria I notice).

It would be quite a change to become a complete 'locavore', however it is certainly possible to produce and purchase up to 90% of your food within that distance by growing your own, having chickens and joining a group like Food Connect or similar.
