Growing local

Must be the time of year (Christmas).

The other night I put dinner in the oven, went to check on it three quarters of an hour later to find that it was still sitting there but with lots of cold air blowing over it. The oven had died :(

Never mind, says I, I have I a microwave and a new cook top.

The next morning I go to melt my cheese on bread for breakfast to find the microwave had died as well. I know from  clients experiences that this happens during periods of thunderstorms. Stuff dies. The microwave is possibly 10yrs old and that's pretty good in this day and age.

Yesterday I phoned my electrician. I'm chatting to Chris thinking...you don't sound all that good...when he tells me he is in hospital suffering from "a rare disease". Chris had Gullian-Barre disease poor love, an auto-immunse disease and will be there for for another 6mths. No help there.

So tonight I have new microwave courtesy of Coles (who, bless them, had a special going if you bought something over $100) but no oven.

The good news is...my new microwave doesn't nag like the old one, the fridge and the car. It beeps once to tell me the the time is up and then is silent. Not sure that is a good thing after all!

Thank you Andy :) Bit of a distance to come to cook dinner though ;)

I just need to find a good electrician and buy myself a new oven. My electrician turns out to be in hospital for a long stay, poor little b.

If anyone can recommend someone who won't rip me off and will turn up when he/she says they will turn up, I would love to hear about them.

ROFL @ Dave.

Lemme know if you need anything knocked up or to borrow my oven Lissa.  Did you know that contrary to what I thought, you can actually see your food cooking in my oven.  I just had to take the door off, the glass windows (yes, there are 2) out and clean the life out of them.  I nearly sliced the top of my thumb in the process, thought'd I'd broken the metal face plate for a while (until I bent it back into shape with a hammer) and wasted a good 3 hours.  However, you couldn't see in the oven when I got here 6 years ago, and now you can.   (My thumb still hurts though).

lol. My daughters cooked the Christmas brunch at their place.

Most of my cooking is done in one pot on the cooktop if I can achieve it. Or with some steamed veg.

What is a microwave Xmas like?

I'm dreaming of a white goods Christmas

With every catalog I like

May your days be digital and bright

And may all your Christmases be white

Thanks for the suggestion Florence, Elaine offered me a loan of hers. I mostly do roasting and cake baking in the oven so a toaster oven might not help much for that reason.

I'll get it fixed in the NY. Just p'd that it happened, and right now before Christmas, is all lol.

sorry to hear that Lissa.  Maybe get a small bench top toaster oven for the mean time?  We've got one originally to heat things up for son, but we ended up using it a lot more than the wall oven.  It is good for one or two people, but no good for cakes and big roast though...

I've never experienced anything quite like this before. What are the odds of two cooking implements dying within hours of each other. Not like I had the storms all that bad here compared with the rest of Brisbane either.

I'm not even going to try to get the oven fixed over Christmas - I know it would be almost impossible to get an electrician let alone get into the shops to get replacement.

I had much better luck with my 30+yr Tuckerbox freezer, Moved for the first time ( dont mention the dirt) so we could paint the walls, it started again with no problems.

Yeah, have had it happen when I moved. I use the oven a lot though, and miss it.

Anyone know a good electrician?

That's how it happens alright.  It also happens when you move for some reason.
