Growing local

I made a neat thing for my chook run to allow us to feed the chooks without having to open a door.

I made a box shaped cage out of wire about 30cm x 30cm x 30cm with one open side. I cut a hole out of the side of the chook run and inserted the cage. The open side of the cage faces the outside of the run.

To feed the chooks we simply empty the chook food into the wire cage and it falls through into the chook run where the chooks can eat it. I have a plastic tray under the cage so seed lands in it and is not lost on the ground. As you can see you can also put small amounts of grass in it for the chooks.

The great thing about this is that the chooks cannot escape when we feed them and my 2 year old son can feed them easily. The holes in the wire are also a little small for the chooks to put their heads through, but big enough for seed, grass and some food scraps.
