Growing local

I haven't been able to attend recent garden visits either due to work or clashing with something else, but I still love growing edibles.  The recent rain was wonderful - currently we are picking jaboticabas, yellow strawberry guava (tiny edible pips); acerola cherry, rosellas (we love them stewed), passionfruits,  the odd dragon fruit, vatious sapotes plus some scant vegies - pumpkin; cherry tomatoes, gourds, cucumber, snake beans and kale.  It was our best pineapple year - 20.  We are gradually adding swales and berms, plus extending food forest areas.  Its a slow process, but enjoyable.

You are bang on correct about the timing of rain. It makes such a difference to the garden to get good rain. Even trees which are supposed to be from arid regions, like the pomegranate can suddenly spring to life with flowers when they get a good dose of rain. I have a few of these as a hedge and have only ever had a few fruit, but should the current flowering come to maturity it would be a magnificent harvest. Unfortunately it is now getting cool and this will probably see the fruit fail. To get a good harvest we need all the stars to align, I've just got to live long enough to see this happen!!

Roger - we grow Black Sapote, (heaps of fruit which needs to be thinned considerably or breaks the branches) White Sapote - (tastes the best) I forget the variety something like Dando??, and another variety grown from seed, Yellow Sapote (strange flavour and texture) and Chico which has not yet fruited.  Elaine - the cutting from your garden are all growing well, thank you.    Dianne - I will remember to post some photos.    I also meant to say it has been our best season for pecans and macadamias - in contrast to the last 3 years - and the lychees were the best we've produced too.  It all depends so much on rainfall at the right time.

It's good to hear that you are progressing with your garden Susan. You are the first person I have noticed to mention growing Sapotes, other than the chocolate pudding fruit, often called Black Sapote, but which is no relation to the White Sapote. What other Sapotes do you grow? I have a couple of white Sapotes, one of which is a "Lemon Gold". It has grown into a largish tree but apparently is used mainly as a pollinator for other varieties of Sapotes. Thus it doesn't set fruit, or at least hasn't in the last 10 years or so. My other white Sapote does set fruit very well, but often suffers from a lack of water when in fruit. It did set a large amount of fruit this year and a lot of that was picked and eaten. The White Sapote trees are very easy to grow and are very hardy. I should probably prune them back hard more often. How are your trees faring?

Susan, it sounds like you are enjoying some very good Fruits and Veggies at your place. My Fruit Trees are a couple of years off fruiting and can't wait to be able to pick our own produce. Do you have any recent photos to share. Look forward to seeing you at a GV soon....
