Growing local

After spending the months of Feb/March in WA, the garden was a jungle.
Two months of rain in Central Qld, things grew which had be strugling for years & grass was sky high.
The veg patch was a mass of pumpkin vines but long beans also surviving. Now planting up for the winter, everthing - beans, peas, lettuce all the cole crops, beetroot & carrots.
Even though I have gardened in the same spot for 30 years the heavy rain had ruined the soil structure in several places, compost is quickly improving it.
Have to get everything tidied up for the 29th May as ou r local Seed Savers & Organic Group will be visiting

It may have leached the nutrients, but I was refering to the soil structure ie nice & friable, breaking up when forked over.
It had not rained for 2 wks when I tried to fork up the soil to plant seedlings, it was still all claggy & came up in lumps, that was just one bed others the soil was quite friable & broke up nicely. My assumpsion was that the bad bed had not had so much cover on it - ie mulch & pumpkin, or that in the previous year I had let the fertillity go by not adding enough compost, mulch etc. Note my soil is rather heavy - more clay than sand. In either case the addition of compost, humus etc rectifys this, but one can not aford to slack off with the addition as sun rain etc disapate the humus. So even if one is not growing a crop its good to have a mulch cover or a cover crop growing that you late did in.

Amazing what a heavy downpour can do.

Am a bit of a newbie still, when you say heavy rain 'ruined the soil' how did you know? Do you mean that it leached out the nutrients...
