Growing local

Front yard vege garden update..........

My garden is infectious!!! I give away lots of freebies and have encouraged lots of passers-by to start growing. Have just planted a strawberry guava on my other front lawn, and have 3 dwarf ducasse bananas arriving shortly to also plant on my mini front lawn. I have planted beans, peas and radish in and around the sweet corn. The paw paw is hidden amonst the tomatoes and zukes. My garden is a shambled mess of veges and herbs - great companions!!

It's looking great Lyn! Where did you source the banana plants from, I have been trying to locate some for awhile now without success?

The secret is to check every few days and remove any that are wriggling around in worm farm. I managed to save my worms, but was really disgusting!! There are a few good comments on the 'new' worm farm blog. Cheers,

BTW, I couldn't work out how to reply to your discussion about maggots in the worm farm, but I got the exact same ones in mine. Not sure if any worms had survived, so I threw the whole lot out this week (into the compost tumbler).

I hadn't fed any fruit, but I did put quite a bit of lettuce in and it had got quite damp.

Excellent front yard - doesn't look like much like the other places in Forest Lake!

Maybe a bit hot for Snow Peas now but you haven't got much to lose to try! The Native Americans used to grow beans and squash up the stalks of the corn so you're following a long tradition!

Fabulous front yard - all front gardens should look like this!

I plant any nitrogen fixing plants at base of sweetcorn to replace what sweetcorn robs the soil of. Once corn harvested, I dig the legume greens back into soil then plant radish. Root vege's fix nitrogen in soil.

Inspiring! Will try radish around the sweet corn, never thought of that! Snowpeas? not too hot for them? Some have self seeded in my garden, and I thought to pick the tips for stir-frying.

That's great news Lyn! Good to see people aren't stealing but taking it up themselves.
