I regularly make my own potting mix at home to save money and control what my plants are growing in. I had a lot of trouble with bagged mixes (although I now use Searles when I need a commercial mix). I used to waste a lot of time adding nutrients every time I potted up a plant so do this now when I make the mix. Vetiver grass helps to stabilise soil and protects it against erosion. It can protect against pests and weeds. Vetiver is also used as animal feed. (Wiki.)
