Having cleared the pumpkin vines, it exposed some available ground.. I’ve asked Albert to remove a line of bricks in between the veggies beds and the row of fruit trees, and dug a trench that’s one spade deep and one spade wide in its place. I then put in a layer of horse manure, scattered some blood & bone, and wood ash, mix it up with a bit of soil and put the dug up soil back in the trench to make a long narrow raised bed ~…

Big day tomorrow, my garden is open for our local Organic & Seed Savers group, hope the rain holds off.
Things a bit late this year but we are eating our own greens for salads, radish, cherry tomatoes ,few long beans still, plenty of pumpkin & sweet potato, & am still experimenting with the arrowroot crop. I spotted my first zuccini this am, beetroot soon but the carrots will be awhile, should soon have heas on the chinese broccoli. Just wish we could grow these crops all…

After some recent landscaping I have a new terrace in my back yard that I am going to turn into my new vegie garden. I have set up a temp chook run "chook tractor" over part of the planned veg garden. I have covered the whole lot with bird netting (the type used for fruit trees), to keep the pesky crows out.
I have added heaps of compost, horse manure and am constantly adding more prunings etc. The chooks are…

A meal prepared from scratch is rather special or even unusual for many families when both parents are working, kids are to be taken to sport and its so easy to nip into the supermarket and buy something quick to pop into the microwave.
We find that it's more satisfying…

Must be time for a progress report. I've actually been out of action (but all over the computer you may have noticed) as I had my tonsils out, which was very unpleasant (much better now). So the garden has suffered several weeks of neglect. Today I finally had a go at it.
This is the perennial basil bush, the rosemary and a blue plumbago (which attracts those little clouds of powder blue/…

I am getting excited about the Winter vegie garden. Unfortunately I don't have anything in yet - I'm very late this year!
This is mostly because of the pumpkins. They heard me thinking about ripping them out and promptly started to produce masses of fruit. Sigh. So I left them - why have them in for 3 months and then rip them out just when they start producing? So this lot have been in for 4 months - going on for 5 now! They…

Well, it's been a while since my last blog post. This rain we've been having has been fantastic for most of the plants with only a few plants suffering from too much rain.
The beans have really taken off and we've been harvesting a couple of handfuls or more a week. The luffa is now taking over and growing through the beans and…
