The "almost" winter garden.

Hi everyone,

Hasn't the weather been glorious - but definitely not cold enough for the start of winter.  I had the most wonderful day in the garden.  Started at 11 after helping at my son's school and didn't come back inside until 5pm.  I am feeling so relaxed and rejuvenated.  My gardening has stopped being a hobby and started to become a necessity.  With a couple of full on weekends away, a couple of late mid-week events + working late and I have been feeling very stressed over the…

2015 Annual update of Stardate 29.05.13 - when real life gets in the way.

I like this idea of updating previous years' blog entries.  So I will continue:

(Note to self: it's quite warm this year. Winter has been delayed).

So, this year the snow peas are going well.  They've been in for a short time but are already producing. Having said that, they are in a more sunny garden this year.   I also have around 8 beans in.  They're growing okay…

Brisbane Qld 2009

Back in late 2009 I must have read something, found something to inspire me to finally start trying to grow food in earnest. Perhaps I met the guy at the markets who eventually made my raised beds (new idea to the market then). I don't remember. All I know is that I suddenly realised I had to turn my backyard into veg beds rather than the croquet lawn I had planned for this area.

We were coming out of a nasty long period of real drought. You…

Cooking with Turmeric

Thanks to Dave Riley who alerted me to the other uses of Turmeric!

I'd only ever used the powder or when I had some tubers, added them to Indian food. And much as I love Indian food, it's not something I eat very often. So the Turmeric was being under-used; wasted really.

These days I wash, dry and cut to size my Turmeric harvest. Place in labelled ziploc bags and into the freezer. It thaws quickly and doesn't need peeling. Chop it up into small pieces - the pix make the pieces…

The ongoing Turkey saga: Turkey 3, Andy 0

I thought I'd best stop hijacking Mr Riley's blog with my Turkey saga.

You'll recall the story so far:

Comment by Andrew Cumberland yesterday

Hey Dianne, I don't expect Bobbie to pick the difference between a turkey and chook.  But, he is actually quite suspicious of our new visitor.  I'm gonna…

Hawaiian Sunshine Sweet Potato Harvest 9th May 2015

Re-used half of an otherwise-useless Tumbleweed composter. Turned it into a wicking bed, filled with a mix of potting mix, vermiculite, compost, soaked fine coir, Organic Xtra. The greenery was allowed to grow at will and trained up an existing trellis in a very sunny spot.

It's quite deep,…

A wave of soil with floating pots: mound gardening with knolls

Since I've seriously begun to zero in on what I want,  the sense of what I'm doing becomes clearer -- at least to me.
My template is mixed vegetable…

THE BEES!!! (and other random bits)

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!! The excitement at my place today!  We are now proud owners of bees - about 4000 Paul assured my young son today as he was trying to count up all our pets.  (Just in case you were curious - 1 dog, 1 cat, 6 chickens, a rescued cockatiel, 2 fish, the worms and now our bees -> all of them are named.  "Wormy worms" for the worms and now "Queenie and the Broodies" for the collectives).  Even my teenage daughter, who, if she wasn't part Phillapino, would be as pale as a…
