The saga of the potting mix

I decided to adapt the information kindly posted by Anne Gibson and Lissa to making my own flavour of container potting mix after a string of failures with asian greens that were previously so reliably productive in containers.

Here's what I did.

First I compress a very generous layer of freshly mowed lawn clippings to the bottom of the container. Grass being grass, it compacts over time. Being the bottom layer I wanted to minimise nitrogen escaping into the atmosphere. It also…

I'm back!

I'm terribly sorry I had such a long break from here... I was completely bogged-down with work (a very heavy workload until recently!) and PhD-related stuff. Now I've got a reasonable schedule again!

Sadly, my gardening efforts were almost a complete failure last year. I had to grow stuff in pots because of the hard clay, and I think the cheap potting mix, combined with my lack of skill, contributed to my garden's demise. I had pickling onions grow ok, but they unfortunately…

Figs and Pumpkins

The first fruits of the White Adriatic fig tree have now been eaten. The whole two of them! It was worth the wait :-) The fruit sat there and looked at us for some weeks then started to soften and after about 3 days of getting progressively softer, it swelled up to almost twice the size it had been.
