DIARY OF POTTING/GARDEN MEDIUM COMPARISON - ISMAIL'S and YOURS

At the January GV at Lissa's we had a guest speaker Ismail Moola, from Nutri-Organics. It was decided that those who purchased his Potting/Garden Medium might like to do a comparison test with the view to seeing which product performs best and fruits with a better tasting product.

It would be good if we could all keep a photo diary here to show the performance results. It would also help if we could each write a little piece about the performance/fertilizing products and methods…

The January Garden .... and still More Mounds

Any excuse.

Finally -- the last section of veg garden has been converted into mounds.

The worst 'soil' (and I use the term lightly) I own, is now contoured according to template. The engineering may be  an easy DIY but the patch had been neglected as occupying the…

The Ripeness of Figs

It is truly frustrating that Figs along with Dragon Fruit and Pineapples, really do not ripen after picking. Unlike Mangoes and stone fruit, you cannot pick Figs at a mature age and let them ripen away from bugs and beasties in the house.

So far, I have not had to resort to bags. And so far I have not had fruit fly in the figs. Long may they both remain so.

This morning I picked 2 Black Genoa figs - one was a day behind the other.

I look for colour and stem - if the…

Excesses of summer.

Hi guys, well this might be the last blog from me for a little bit as my long holiday is almost at an end and GASP!! - I have to join the working class again and start at my new job :)  But you never know, I might be desperate for some gardening escapism and starting over at a new workplace may not be as bad as I think so…

Thanks so much to everyone who turned up for the Garden Rescue. Though embarrassed by the state of disrepair, it was so good to have the…

Year of the Fruit

Has anyone else noticed that this season has been terrific for local fruit growers?

Last year my Meyer Lemon produced one fruit that survived to maturity. This year the tree's covered with good sized lemons.

The Wai Chee lychee produced its first crop last year. Here's a link to the…

The gardening equation: There's been a quickening.

When I started my current garden project I wanted to create it via recycling. While I've thrown some local manures at it , the major inputs have been paper, cardboard, grass clippings,  tree and brush trimmings.

I've collected, accumulated and added these items relentlessly for 6 years and my yellow sand has turned into loam, albeit very sandy loam.

What I've done is add heaps of carbon and offered up my labour to its accumulation in the soil.

If you seek to replicate…

2016 -Busy start to the year.

Hi everyone,

How has the gardening been?  I've been on holidays in north Queensland for 2 weeks and nearly died.  Being up there makes me appreciate my coastal Brisbane temperatures much more.  You literally cannot do anything between the hours of 9 and 4 - it is just tooo hot to move and my parents don't have air con so you get no respite even being in doors.  I was out in the garden till 11 today.  Yes, I was covered head to toe and yes I was hot but not unbearably hot.  I would…

2015/16 SUMMER - DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY

This is a continuous summer diary which I will add to as the season progresses.

22.12.15

Hot and basically dry with some overcast days but enough showers to keep the rain water tank ticking over for watering.

Some plants are enjoying this weather, some aren't.…
