Back from the honeymoon

Well, we're back and I'm keen to get back into the garden. It's so hot in the middle of the day so looks like it will be sunset gardening and morning if I get up before it gets too hot. Most of the garden has suffered from lack of water while we were away including the corn - attempt number three. Still hopeful that there might be one or two salvageable cobs on them. Dug up my first potatoes today. Four fairly decent sized of the cranberry red from one seed potato. Not a huge crop but happy as t… Continue

Productive Weekend

Well, it's been an amazing weekend in the garden. Sorry I didn't make it to your visit Amanda - we ended up so busy in our garden and I had to make the most of my fiance's weekend off for the heavy labour part (he only get 1 in 3). Earlier in the week he borrowed the neighbour's rotary hoe and extended out the patch down the side of the house and dug me a whole new patch at the back of the house. We spent yesterday replanting some of our hedge and swapping some plants with bigger ones donated by… Continue

August preparations

Well, we had a busy day in the garden yesterday preparing the back bed for spring planting in a couple of weeks' time. The whole bed was covered in tomatoes bar a little patch I dug up and planted a few weeks ago. I picked off the ripe tomatoes as we went and ended up with half a 9 litre bucket! I put a thin layer of mulch down which will hopefully start to break down a little by over the next two weeks before I start planting. The patch looks so bare just covered in mulch, but it also looks muc… Continue

Getting into the rhythm of things

It looks like I might finally be getting the hang of this gardening thing. I've been consciously trying to plant something every week and keeping a planting diary and it's paying off. Soon I will have a continuous carrot supply to go with the beans which are still producing slowly which is great! They taste soooo much better than the ones from the shops. I've just harvested another two pumpkins off the vine and it looks as if there are more on the way, provided they don't get trimmed any more by… Continue

More autumn gardening

I'm certainly loving all this rain! I haven't had to water my garden in over a week and the raintank has remained full. Just when I was thinking this morning that I should water my garden along comes another shower. I've just started a week of holidays from uni so I'm definitely looking forward to getting into the garden. Today I did a bit of weeding before the rain came. That horrible grass just loves to populate my vegie patch. It was good to see some decent fat and juicy sized worms in the so… Continue

Hi Vanessa, yes I won’t be able to make it to the next meet :(
Anyways, if you want to borrow the other book as well before you get your chickens you can come by and pick it up, other wise you’re okay to keep it until the meeting after next, or pass it on to Donna if she’s interested..

Yay, can't wait to see photos and hear about your chooks!

We were at Acacia Ridge Pet Supplies yesterday and they had Isa Brown pullets for $14.50 - already laying... she could have talked me into it easily even though I want Light Sussex and have no coop yet!
hopefully for Christmas...

I only planted my water chestnut on Wednesday arvo… I hope I didn’t left them too long, I only read just now that you have to keep them in water or they will lose their germinating power, but I kept them in the zip lock bag it came with in the crisper.. ^^”

I’ve planted 2 in one broccoli box and another 2 in their own broccoli boxes by themselves, and have used 1 ½ bag of organic potting mix with 1 bag of coarse sand. I’ve only filled up half of the broccoli boxes as I didn’t have enough potting mix and sand, I hope it’s deep enough for them. As I only had little time to plant them, I didn’t check the ph so I didn’t add lime. (The PH kit I’ve got ask to dry the soil sample before testing!!) Didn’t realize the instruction didn’t mention how deep they should be planted.. so how deep did you plant yours?

Hi Vanessa, here's the address of the pet supplies & produce store I mentioned near you - Acacia Pet supplies, 96 Sherbrooke Rd, WILLAWONG. There's someone selling stable manure for $2 a bag on that street too.
