Paw paw trees LOVE lime. If you have any chunks of concrete, dig in around the root system. The best paw paw's grow near concrete paths, as they feed off the lime. Your red paw paw will be bi-sexual. When tree gets to height you want, sever the ro...

It's looking great Lyn! Where did you source the banana plants from, I have been trying to locate some for awhile now without success?

Well done for being proud to show your gardening talent to the street. I am still thinking of what to do in our front yard. Decisions decisions...

The secret is to check every few days and remove any that are wriggling around in worm farm. I managed to save my worms, but was really disgusting!! There are a few good comments on the 'new' worm farm blog. Cheers,

BTW, I couldn't work out how to reply to your discussion about maggots in the worm farm, but I got the exact same ones in mine. Not sure if any worms had survived, so I threw the whole lot out this week (into the compost tumbler). I hadn't fed an...

Excellent front yard - doesn't look like much like the other places in Forest Lake!

I plant any nitrogen fixing plants at base of sweetcorn to replace what sweetcorn robs the soil of. Once corn harvested, I dig the legume greens back into soil then plant radish. Root vege's fix nitrogen in soil.

thats looking realy healthy and productive .

Inspiring! Will try radish around the sweet corn, never thought of that! Snowpeas? not too hot for them? Some have self seeded in my garden, and I thought to pick the tips for stir-frying.

Do you have flowers to encourage insects? If not, try marigolds, chrysanthemums and packet flower mixes for vege gdns. I agree that partial shade works well too.

Companion planting confuses the pests because their favourite plants are camouflaged in smell by so many other vege and herb smells. Use a companion guide chart, because you can hinder the growth of some veges by planting non-compatible herbs near...

That's great news Lyn! Good to see people aren't stealing but taking it up themselves.

My garden is infectious!!! I give away lots of freebies and have encouraged lots of passers-by to start growing. Have just planted a strawberry guava on my other front lawn, and have 3 dwarf ducasse bananas arriving shortly to also plant on my ...

Buying bulk organic manures - take 2

Lots of discussion about bulk buys with no luck.
Does anyone have a yard big enough to stock bulk buy? Perhaps members could then buy a bag or trailer load, depending on individual needs. As I don't have a tow bar and trailer anymore, my buying power is limited to 2 bags in my car or paying for a delivery that is generally too big for my garden ( I have a mini house and even minnier garden! ).
To simplify matters, I imagine this to be an honesty system.

Buying local........

I'm in the process of setting up a new vege garden at the front of my house, hence many purchases and expense!!

In view of my thoughts on sustainability, I decided to give Bunnings a big miss and try my local hardware shop at Forest Lake. The owner gave me great advice and service, along with a discount :)
The original price was still cheaper than Bunnings AND his delivery fee (on the way home from work) will be about $5 - $10.00!! Normal delivery is about $20.00. The last quote I received from… Continue

Hi Lyn

Thanks very much for your tips on companion planting. I didn't realise that some insect repelling plants can actually inhibit the growth of other plants. I'll look further into this..Have a great day.

Pree :)

Wow, cool looking front yard!

I just got the first edible planted out front (a grape vine) but it may be a while before we do anything like you've done.

wow lyn, the front yard looks grand, very nice garden. That will get the neighbours and people passing, thinking about gardening. :-)

(For the past year, Ive always been looking at a neighbours yard up the road and seeing what he is growing now in his front yard and I always see others stareing at the yard....and ive had too peep the horn at them, the lights have turned green GO people. heehee.)
