Hi Fiona, you've got nice tomato photos there ~ I am glad the pearl chilli survived. I've sown the green grape seeds last Saturday, and they've germinated. I hope they will survive long enough for me to get a crop out of them ~ as I mentioned before I haven't had much success with tomatoes ~ although did get some cherry toms last winter ~

Hi Fiona,
Beelarong Farm meets on Weds mornings and Sunday mornings 9-12. Anyone can walk through the garden at other times and take a look - why dont you just check it out when you have time. Catch up with people at the meeting times though. No sun is predominantly the reason I got a plot at Beelarong, and even though I have tried at home, this is where I have been most successful with produce, and you never have any trouble with attracting bees to pollinate things... they are well aware of the Farm and all its goodies! cheers.

Welcome to Brisbane Local Food (BLF) and Brisbane Seed Savers (BSS)! I have found everyone to be very helpful and full of good advice. I am the co-ordinator of BSS and am looking forward to meeting you next weekend.

You certainly have a challenge on your hands, but I think you will be surprised what you can get to grow. Shade and clay is pretty much the opposite of my sand and sun! I started seriously trying to grow my own about 9 mths ago on pretty much no budget so know it can be tough. A couple of my gardens are made up of about 80% ground stump (hey it was free lol) and it still hasn't broken down yet! I keep adding soil, manure & cane mulch when I can.

Profile Information

About me:
Individual
I am currently involved with the following community gardens and groups:
I am looking to join up with Beelarong Community Garden if I can't get my own backyard to grow what I'd like - little, lots of possums, lots of shade, with clay and rubble and acid "scrub" soil. I started a worm farm and an open cold compost heap about 4 months ago. This will be my first group - but I am keen to participate
I am interested in:
Heirloom vegetables and learning to grow my own veges in a very poor-soiled, shaded, townhouse garden. My parents are farmers, growing heirloom tomatoes.

"To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves" Gandhi.
I can offer:
Garden involvement, information
About what I can offer:
I know a little bit about heirloom tomatoes, growing, taste, and possibly some seeds to swap.
I am looking for:
Garden involvement, produce, materials, information, training

International Seed Swap Day

I'd just like to thank EVERYONE who met up on Saturday for a great meeting of minds (and seeds). A group on this forum - Brisbane Seed Savers - met on Saturday to swap seeds and stories, share knowledge and tips. It was great. It was my first meeting, and I was made to feel extremely welcome. The group stood out because of the pots of plants on the table! I am very impressed with what people are planting and harvesting in their back yards, too. Okra, dragonfruit, rare Frost beans, giant zucchini… Continue

Saving tomato seeds

Well, tonight I saved a few tomato seeds in anticipation of the international world seed swap day on Saturday - and meeting local Brisbane seed savers at the Roma Street Parklands. I had some sunburst cherry tomatoes (lovely tasting little orange), some Green Grape (another yummo larger cherry - green of course), and some Black Zebra. These tomatoes are courtesy of my parents, who save their own seeds, grow heirloom tomatoes, and sell their tomatoes at Brisbane farmers markets - at West End (wee… Continue

First day as a member

This is fantastic! I am so pleased to have stumbled across your virtual community!

I live in a townhouse, so my garden is very shaded with very poor soil (clay, builders rubble, and acid "scrub" soil) - my place backs on to a patch of scrub, and even the native plants find it hard to flourish! But I am persevering.

I have a very skinny budget, so I am going slow on the soil conditioning. My worm farm and cold open compost is going ok, but I just wish the worms ate more, and faster!

My parents… Continue
