The angled is more often used for eating, while the smooth is more often used for sponges. In saying that apparently you can use them for either but the quality of the sponge is different. They do cross pollinate (only between luffa) so if saving...

I think it was transplant shock - they only had newspaper around the rootball. Mind you they were left in the sun before planting, then probably dried out between waterings...

Coolies! How exciting!!

It took my smooth luffa a long time to 'ripe' after it reached full size.. I don't actually know what is 'ripe' but use the same principal as pumpkin... wait for the stalk to look dry and the skin yellows... I'd love to get my hands on some angled...

My main reason was for this too..

Does is matter which luffa I can use for the bathroom? (these is the 2nd reason im growing it for) The main is for shade on window.

The angled luffa would have to be fibrous and brown (dried) before you can pick the seeds... I bought my seeds from Yuen's in the Valley, quite a good success rate.

Donna's Garden - 19/11/09

Well the infrastructure Manager still hasn't built the chook pen yet, but has randomly decided to enlarge one of my beds and build a frame for pumpkins to grow over and provide shade. He also decided we need a water tank so has been busy digging and leveling for a slab... I keep telling him the chook pen is at the top of the list, maybe he will listen soon.

Elephant Garlic (& Bunching Onions)

I have just harvested my Elephant Garlic that was initially planted in May (still have some left in the garden planted in July) and am pretty happy with the results.

As the photos show, there was a large variety of sizes of bulbs which will now be hung in the laundry (outside) for about two weeks to dry for storage -… Continue

Donna's Garden - 30/10/09

It has been awhile since I got out into the garden and I only have one bed planted and growing at the moment. In saying that it is *very* planted and has heaps in it because it was the only bed ready when the seedlings came up! There is red okra starting to flower, angled luffa (last two seeds so hopefully get some this time!), rockmelon with two babies, stars & moon watermelon, black carrots, corn with cobs starting to show silk and snake beans starting to flower and a couple of kohl rabi t… Continue

Lucerne Mulch

I have just used lucerne mulch for the first time on my raised beds, instead of the fine sugar cane mulch. There were three reasons:
1. Price - I was paying $12.50 for sugar cane and the lucerne was $10.00
2. Nutrients - Lucerne is supposed to be better for the soil
3. Water Retention - The sugar cane was a solid mat and the beds were really dry underneath

The lucerne is very different to the sugar cane, there are long stalks and lots of little green bits covering the dirt. It goes a lot furthe… Continue

Donna's Garden - 16/08/09

Well Gardenate.com finally got me off my bottom this weekend, I have planted seeds in an old concrete tub at the back door with hessian over it to keep it moist...hopefully. While a lot of them were supposed to be planted direct I decided to try it this way so I don't forget to water them if they are randomly scattered in different gardens.

I planted celeraic, carrot, cucumber, eggplant, globe artichokes, kohl rabi, lettuce, luffa (my last two seeds of angled luffa - hopefully get something to… Continue

Hi Donna, it's great to be back and have lots of spare time for the garden. Unfortunately it's now too hot for much work during the day, will have to spend it planning the garden instead. Will definitely be making it to the December get together at Roma St. Looking forward to it. The chook house arrived from my sister on Monday night so now awaiting the handyhubby to put it together for me - will need to use an electric drill and I don't want to stuff it up. Hoping you will get some chooks for Christmas - maybe disguised as a present for David even? Hehe.

Hi Donna, if you don't need a lot of Gypsum I can bring some to your place with the sweet potato cuttings and yellow passionfruit seedlings (so you can share it with others for me at the next meeting) sometime next week, most possibly on the weekend..

Thanks for looking out for Pekin duck for us, Albert is still interested and hoping to get a couple after we're back from Melbourne. About the fertilized eggs.. co-incidentally I think one of my leghorns going broody.... maybe... although I think leghorns rarely go broody and they supposedly don't make good mothers... will keep an eye on her ..

Maybe it’s a good time to start crop rotation since most of your beds are ready to plant. I found that it’s good for reminding me what I need, like my legume & corn beds have lots of spare space and it reminds me that I need to plant more corn & beans if I want to have a good continuous supply ~

Hi Donna, thanks for your tip about the nutrients relations to female and male flower balance, but I think it’s not the issue I am having atm as I am getting a good balance just not synchronized... seems to be getting all males one day and all females the next and then all males … maybe I should start refrigerating male flowers although it would be quite troublesome to label which male flower is which …
