We installed a 5100 L tank in 2007, and it's for the garden and a little for my brother's fish tanks. We've had pretty good rain during summer since then, so it's usually 50 - 100% full. I can't say for winter though because my mum left the tap on...

That happend to one batch which I planted late in the season before... I thought it was because it's too cold for them as they were pretty stunt with short status too.... Those were supermarket seeds... the first sowing was normal...

Huh, knew I read it somewhere! On the *packet* duh, it says 18 days from when silks emerge then start checking for ripeness. Wish I had read that this morning before I butchered a cob (and tied it back up with a hair tie lol)... I was getting sick...

I would get the biggest that would fit/you can afford - we have a 3000L tank near the veggie garden which is *always* empty - but we refill it from a 24000L tank out the back. i think anything less than 5000L isn't worth it - for veggies anyway.

We are planning to purchase a water tank and currently investigating options. The current rebate requires it to be plumbed in to the house which we are not doing as it is solely for my garden so we won't be applying for it. Hubby will be doing it ...

Yep, you get that! Is it a heritage variety? I noticed it particularly with Balinese corn.

I seem to have slightly androgynous male flowers - a few of my corn plants have grown kernels on the male flower stalks - here's a picture:

Elephant Garlic (& Bunching Onions)

I have just harvested my Elephant Garlic that was initially planted in May (still have some left in the garden planted in July) and am pretty happy with the results.

As the photos show, there was a large variety of sizes of bulbs which will now be hung in the laundry (outside) for about two weeks to dry for storage -… Continue

Donna's Garden - 30/10/09

It has been awhile since I got out into the garden and I only have one bed planted and growing at the moment. In saying that it is *very* planted and has heaps in it because it was the only bed ready when the seedlings came up! There is red okra starting to flower, angled luffa (last two seeds so hopefully get some this time!), rockmelon with two babies, stars & moon watermelon, black carrots, corn with cobs starting to show silk and snake beans starting to flower and a couple of kohl rabi t… Continue

Lucerne Mulch

I have just used lucerne mulch for the first time on my raised beds, instead of the fine sugar cane mulch. There were three reasons:
1. Price - I was paying $12.50 for sugar cane and the lucerne was $10.00
2. Nutrients - Lucerne is supposed to be better for the soil
3. Water Retention - The sugar cane was a solid mat and the beds were really dry underneath

The lucerne is very different to the sugar cane, there are long stalks and lots of little green bits covering the dirt. It goes a lot furthe… Continue

Donna's Garden - 16/08/09

Well Gardenate.com finally got me off my bottom this weekend, I have planted seeds in an old concrete tub at the back door with hessian over it to keep it moist...hopefully. While a lot of them were supposed to be planted direct I decided to try it this way so I don't forget to water them if they are randomly scattered in different gardens.

I planted celeraic, carrot, cucumber, eggplant, globe artichokes, kohl rabi, lettuce, luffa (my last two seeds of angled luffa - hopefully get something to… Continue

Donna's Garden - 19/07/09 August Garden Visit

Finally hosted a Garden Visit, should have done it months ago - it was such a good motivator to get things ready in the garden!

My husband (the 'Infrastructure Manager') concreted up the side of the house enclosing the already existing gardens and screwed second hand tin to to the fence before filling it with free green mulch sourced from a nice local tree lopper. This meant that we didn't have to dig up the grass and are hoping that the nitrogen draw down kills it, then it will be ready for pl… Continue

Maybe it’s a good time to start crop rotation since most of your beds are ready to plant. I found that it’s good for reminding me what I need, like my legume & corn beds have lots of spare space and it reminds me that I need to plant more corn & beans if I want to have a good continuous supply ~

Hi Donna, thanks for your tip about the nutrients relations to female and male flower balance, but I think it’s not the issue I am having atm as I am getting a good balance just not synchronized... seems to be getting all males one day and all females the next and then all males … maybe I should start refrigerating male flowers although it would be quite troublesome to label which male flower is which …

So after reading my PM message, i shall be right in two weeks and have lots of bottles for you.........let me know.
and cool about the comfry, can you let it grow in the garden and dig it all in for compost or will it shoot back up again and again????
Im going to start a tea compost, as soon as i can get my hands on a cheap fish pump. (i think $10 or $20 from overflow)
For now ill keep it in the pot plant and just pick at it for the compost tins that ive started....going to get a couple more tins from the dump and start a few more compost tins....comes with lids, just drill holes around them and keeps the heat in them, ive noticed, fast composting lol. Easy for me to use and move and dont have to worry about the land lord....heehee.

HI dona, just wondering about the plant you gave me at the last garden visit. (the one in the purple pot) Is this plant ok to put into the vege patch and let it go wild?
and how and what should i be doing with it heehee.

I repoted it into a bigger container, till i knew what to do with it and now ive got some spare time i can get back into the garden heehee.

I cant make it moro but if you like we can set up a day and time and ill come over your way for a visit and catch up. (need to return your wonderful book) Your not that far from me. (wednesday onwards would be great for me....let me know and ill keep day free)

Donna, Someone recently posted that they were going to buy sugar cane mulch in bulk for around $5 a bag. I can't seem to find the original post now that I've decided to buy some. Sorry to bother you, but do you remember the post? I've searched the site and can't find it.

thanks so much, Donna :) we go to the valley every week for taichi, not this week, going to melb tomorrow for Derek's mum's funeral and be away for a week, so won't be able to get to the garden mtg... Btw, i bought another packet of yam bean seeds (from Yuens's), seeing they were so successful last year, and have just put them into punnets to sprout, one has already come up!
