yes, there's an ornamental variety known as 'Love Lies Bleeding', it has a long droopy red flower spike and leaves with a red love-heart shape on them
December 7
do this plants have a flower? (they look like the plants, that people use for inside plants?) very pretty plant anyhow.
December 7
thanks addy. I'm on to it!
December 7
Yes, I often "tip" the plants - about 15cm is good - and lots of side shoots come up. i've had mine bush up to a metre high!
December 7
do you think if i chopped of the top of the plants, anout 15cm off where the majority of the seeds are, it would grow into a bushier plant with more leaves? Or is it too far gone and i just have to wait for the next generation? i love this stuff!!!

Lol, I said not to let self seed... checked my own and seeds everywhere!!! Have collected seed and pulled but think that one will now be known as amaranth bed...
December 6
If yo come this way, Cass, I'd give you some seeds... and seedlings, I've got them all over the place!
December 6
I either have all red or asia red amaranth. maybe we could swap seeds?
December 6
This is what I grow and eat - first picture at the top - http://www.evergreenseeds.com/edamyintsach.html Sometimes they go to seed quite quickly, I find that's when it hasn't been watered, or not in good soil... also in winter.
December 4
how can you tell if you have the grain type or the leaf type. mine has gone to seedbut they are very small. I may have got them from geen harvest. Are the amaranth grain as big as wheat grain or smaller?
December 4
Just to confirm then Cass, you have Addy's which is the leaf variety...
December 4
Cass, I cook it even more simply than that - just boil the leaves and peeled stems in a bit of flavoured stock then add coconut powder and fish sauce, if you like it spicy, add some sambal or chopped chillies. I also like it as a soup - increase the…

If you're coming to Roma Street tomorrow Sat 5th, I will have some red Amaranth seeds. Supposed to be the 'leaf' rather than the 'seed' variety which I got from City Farm. I have not yet tried the leaves, since it's growing in an inhospitable place…

Amaranth

The garden is on its way! The best vegetable thus far has been Amaranth. I've heard loads of good things about amaranth including that it is high in vit C and B calcium and iron. So lovely Donna or maybe Addy had some seeds and planted them a month or so ago. To my surprise amaranth has out grown everything else in the garden -even the weeds. It is avoided by the bugs that seem to be attacking everything else and is growing over a meter tall.
I went looking for a recipe that could use the leaves… Continue

finally- eating from the garden

It has started. Nearly a year here and we are reaping the benefits from our garden. Salad mix in pots near the kitchen have finally overcome the possums. Mustard seed greens cover most of the ground were other seeds have failed to shoot. We have so many arrowroot plants now. They make a nice tropical feel to the garden. Sweet potatoes, cassava and Ibika are ready to be harvested in a few weeks. The lemon myrtle in going in homemade Ice-cream and yoghurt with the macadamia nuts that fall from the… Continue
