Having harvested my little crop, I found your observations really interesting, Donna, particularly about where they should be planted. I'll save some of my "rounds" for planting. Thanks for a very interesting blog!

I've had some huge grasshoppers around this year too. Just been getting them manually, but they can be pretty intimidating!

Aurgghh! My precious angled loofah - 4 inch long - has been chomped at by a big, horrid grasshopper. I found it hiding behind a stake and .... off with his head, with my trusty secaters. Does anyone have a good way of deterring these pests?

Wow, Elaine, you have such a neat seed-sprouting system! Here's mine - a makeshift counter next to an outdoor concrete sink (recycled from our renovated laundry) with rain-tank water plumbed. The "apple juice" container is filled with liquid worm ...

Don't leave them get too old, can be bitter! No longer than 12 inches, I'd say, but hard to judge by size, more by how woody the skin gets. I've kept bought ones in the fridge for up to a week.

Donna, your angled loofah looks terrific! Mine had one male flower, then all the females popped up, no male in sight to pollinate them (sigh) - hoping that they can self pollinate. Btw, I don't think you can get sponges from angled loofahs - but I...

We lined ours because Derek got treated pine (we were sooo inexperienced!), and didn't want the poison to leach into the bed! This garden looks great!

Summer eating has begun!

First zucchini harvest was really gratifying! When we returned from Melbourne a week ago, there they were, ready for the wok! My dad had been watering the backyard while we were away, thank goodness, or everything would have shrivelled up and died.

However, while we were away, the dreaded mildew had also devel… Continue

Looking forward to good summer eating!

CUCUMBERS! My favourite summer crop, and the first spring planting to go into the old tomato bed. The "infrastructure manager" built a fab angled cukie frame which also incorporates a frame for shadecloth:

Heat wave - Damage Control!

This heat wave, plus empty water tank, has put great stress on my productive garden! We have been hand watering and mulching like mad, but today I noticed 2 of my little caulis have turned pink - the bigger ones seem to be coping. So some damage control measures had to be taken, and hubby was pressed into labour. In a few minutes, he erected a frame over the brassica bed, and threw an old shadecloth over it, stapled on and voila!

Still harvesting Autumn crops

Reading others' blogs and posts made me feel really slack! Apart from maintenance, I haven't put in new seedlings or seeds (excepting beans) - but am still enjoying the fruits of my previous labours! The heaviest croppers are tomatoes:

I harvest this amount every 2 or 3 days! T… Continue

Autumn harvest

The wired frame for my tomato plants collapsed today and had to be rebuilt. Too much weight - loaded with tomatoes! As usual, I've been too greedy and not spaced out the seedlings properly.

Hi Addy

Not sure how often you get into the Valley, so if you are interested I can get the seeds (there are a few places in Inala that have very interesting seeds that I have never heard of...) and give them to Christopher at the Garden Visit on 7th November.

If there is anything else specific you were looking for let me know the name and I can see if they have it.

Hi Addy
Sorry I missed your message here on this forum until now. The order you remembered for the no dig garden was right. Essentially all the new nutrients under the paper - then thick layer of seed free mulch on top. Hope you tried it and it is working OK.

Hi Addy,

We generally harvest 3-4 kilos over 3 flushes of mushrooms. It will depend on how big you grow your mushrooms before harvesting.

I couldn't believe they are already up, out of all the seeds I planted last Sunday (listed in a blog on my page but there were heaps of varieties)I have radish, kohl rabi, cucumber & okra up. Although I was very diligent about keeping the water up and had a hessian sack over them for a couple of days - read somewhere it was good for carrot seed so thought it was worth a try as I don't always get very good results. The problem with the hessian sack was that the seeds already up are *of course* in the middle of the old concrete laundry sink I am using.

You were looking for okra seedlings a few weeks ago, I don't have any seedlings to spare - only planted 8 last Saturday - and the seeds are already up if you want I can give Christopher some green okra seeds for you to start yourself.

It's looking less likely as the meeting is Sunday but if I do get some I will get you some as well for sure.
