Growing local

This guy has got it all figured out, working from home. I just wish he wasn't consuming my small jaboticaba bush.

That's an interesting link, Elaine, because it suggests that they're most active at night, which was what I thought. However, this one was munching away in the middle of the day for some reason. Like one of the grubs on that link, this one has created a lovely tutu out of leaves to go with the conventional sticks-secured-at-one end look which is the standard.

Ah! So much more complex than I had understood. Anyway, your guy or gal is possibly a Saunders Case Moth.

Elaine, you've prompted me to do a bit more research. Since this one is still in the larval stage, it could be male or female. If it's female, it will pupate and hatch within the cocoon and remain there. The it will wait for a male to visit so they can mate. Then she'll lay eggs in the case and the caterpillars have to disperse themselves. I guess this explains why you can get an outbreak of these case moths on a plant, as I have seen on a NZ Christmas bush on my street, as the female I'd stuck in one spot.

I hate to rain on your parade ;-) it's a female, the males are free-flying. Surely she doesn't eat all that much? Doncha just love the cases, works of art and all done with a mouth and no hands.
