Growing local

i have taken down the tripod style frame , and put up this 4 stake/ meash circle / string tower , im sure i will regret that when it comes time to take it down but as i over did the planting (12 plants ) i could see that the original frame was not going to support them .

Donna, my corn is harvested, and I'm leaving the stalks as stakes for the snake beans to climb. They seem quite strong, and the leaves will be added support for the vines!

Interesting that your beans are so close to the shallots - beans/peas are reputed to not like onion-family. Not all the advice given on companion planting works all the time!

the stake idea sounds good. bill mollison (permaculture) reckons you can plant corn seedlings, bean seeds and pumpkin seeds on the same day and it will form a perfect guild - the pumpkin covers the ground, the beans fix nitrogen for the corn, the beans grow up the corn stalks, and the corn is ready before the beans take over. it's called the three sisters guild, cos that's what native americans used to call it. i've done it ok, but i usually separate the pumpkin from the other two a bit, and then it usually decides to grow in another direction :)

Wow that looks great Christopher. I made a mistake and planted with my corn (in the same hole), now it looks like when I harvest the corn I either rip out the snake beans or just harvest the ears and leave the rest there as stakes!
