Growing local

At least my sister can grow pawpaws. For the past few years, I have been lucky enough to get a lovely pawpaw when I visit. The plant needs support to hold the weight of pawpaws. An extension ladder is needed to reach the top lot of pawpaws. They have a delicious flavour.

On the flip side Christa, these pawpaws are less than a metre off the ground... fresh pickings for little furries when they ripen, just like the monstera delicious at the moment.

I will cut the tree down, possibly soon if the majority of the fruit starts ripening at once. The problem with this is that it just grows new shoots to the same height as before. Happened with the male pawpaw and the Carombola.

I agree with you Elaine about pollarding a tree when it gets to a suitable height - I readily do this with legume trees but for a pawpaw tree this makes me nervous. I found this video which give good advice about how to do this - located here.

Alternative is to buy/make a fruit-picker. I have 2 neither of which are really suited to large fruits :-( After fruiting, cut the tree down to a more manageable size - extends its life a bit too.

This tree seems to be Reaching for the Stars. Perhaps it is the amount of Sunshine on the Paw Paws up there that makes them so sweet. If it gets to much higher they will have to hire a Cherry Picker.

I have the same problem with one of my trees at the moment Christa. Can't reach the fruit anymore which is now at roof height. Very annoying as the fruit is so sweet.
