Growing local

For those who have grown Luffa before, how long do they normally take to dry? I'm on the edge of my seat waiting!

On the vine until dry then stored in dry conditions until the skin is crispy. We've done plenty at the school but I can't arrive on a time scale. You don't want the sponge to shrink too much inside the skin (so you don't want it kept on the vine in the hot sun forever)and stiffen, as that's what we often did.

So, I guess, harvest when dry --peel when you think it's ready. Most vines are so productive over a longish period that you'll get a crack at a  few.

As squash vines go, Luffas tick a lot of boxes: productive with staggered fruiting, very easy to grow, not virulent at all, nice flowers, tasty when young, useful in the bathroom... Although the ridged gourd variety seems preferred for cooking such as in curries or in Vietnamese cuisine.

Their other advantage, in my experience, is that they'll offer a longer harvest season than some other climbing gourds and squashes. All a in all, a great introduction to the WWG -- the Wonderful World of Gourds.

Kids love them.

Not sure Sid, but I think you have to wait for them to turn brown and then peel brittle skin off and save seeds if you wish.   That is what I remember when we were kids.  Others may know more.
