Awww Dave. You hit me right in the "Andy's Pet Hate!" bone.
I've seen warnings about backyard growers of fruit and vege being biosecurity time bomb for years. Now the chooks?! Raw milk will kill you too (except, there has never been a single death in Australia - oh, the news reported the odd few but on proper investigation it turns out that it wasn't the milk at all). And jeez, I couldn't possibly be allowed to sell jam or other products like cheese that I make. Thousands could die!
The draw back with these arguments is that it's only been the last 30 years or so that all these crazy regulations have come into play. Yet, I didn't notice any mass extinction events prior to that. I also note that scientists are finally paying attention to robust variety in gut bacteria and the correlation of general immunity in those who don't live in sterile environments.
My belief is that we are killing ourselves by being overly clean and sterile. Big business grows big and fat while people dine on over-processed crap sold as food... oh but it is cheap and produced "safely." I'll stick to eating my filthy fruit and veg. I'll dine on eggs that aren't sprayed with disinfectant.
The other thing that annoys me is that despite what Government says, there are a hell of a lot of hares running all over Qld. People lived on the damn things in the depression. Oh, but god forbid someone kept some properly and cleanly at home now days. Oh yeah, we made that hard by introducing so many viruses that did not exterminate the rabbit (or the hares).
But I agree. If there is animal to human spread of bird flu, my chooks and quails will be slaughtered. And I won't need some Government boffin to tell me to do it.
Not much meat for the kill. Rabbits can be killed at three months of age...fed on whatever and they breed like rabbits.
Illegal in Qld of course...and nowadays with the latest virus releases far too expensive to inoculate.
Thus the death of the local rabbit industry...and I love rabbit.
There's also this latest alarm from the ABC-- Backyard chooks could be a biosecurity time bomb -- and I accept the caution.
So I'd kill my own chickens (kept for eggs) if there was another Avian outbreak.
I think we have to defer to these issues --just as horse owners must in regard to Hendra Virus.
Some folk want chickens at the school garden but -- despite approval -- I think it's very problematical.
They are full size at about 8 weeks Dave. I really only eat excess males or birds that are at least two years old (that's a full life for a quail).
They are not really a robust bird Christa. They die quite easily from fright or even minor damage.
Can't wait for the menu item.
I loves poultry on a plate. How long before you can eat them?
Congrats, it makes me think of Easter. They are cute little blighters aren't they? I would love some 2 legged feathered friends, but the other two residents here, don't like them.
So it looks like my four-legged friends and native bees are it for me, and also a part time python.
