Growing local

Well, this morning I woke to a roosters crow which meant today was the day. 3 of my 7 chicks were boys and I put my country raised childhood experiences to good use. Still had to call my mum 1/2 way through my first one for some help.

These guys ranged from 1.6 to 2 kg   When I do move to the farm and do this for our meat, I’ll probably keep to dual breed bird like the Sussex.  But I have heard some meat breeds are ready in 8 weeks so they would be tempting.

Ive been looking at cornish chooks, meant to be 1kg at 5 weeks! Be good to raise 20 or so for the freezer, trying to find fertilized eggs for them is proving to be tough

Butchering the birds definately gets easier as you do more, no more pleasant but easier.

20 weeks Doug.  They were Sussex breed so not as quick as meat birds but I could have done them earlier - just lacked incentive until they started crowing.

Nice plucking job.
