i just store them in a wire barsket above my kitchen cabnets , as long as they are dry and cool they will go for a good 6 mounths .

its a great crop, how do you store it longer term?

hi Amanda , you can let it winter over , but this is a bit of a waste as you only need the buds to grow the next crop and if the conditions are bad (that is wet ) the Quality will drop . it is by far better to harvest once the leaves have startted to go yellow and die off, you get a crop and make space for a more productive crop over winter .

Beautiful Chris.

Should all ginger be lifted now or will it be right in the ground over winter to regrow next spring?

Thanks to everyone for your positive comments . Cassandra , a sandy loam would be ideal for Ginger , just add as much compost /well broken down manure as you can . dont water to heavily untill they are up and growing.plant your piece,s of rhizome in early spring, you can harvest fresh green rhizomes after about 5 months growth { late summer} leave the main crop until the leaves begin to yellow , late autumn even mid winter here on the coast, more like early autumn inland.
