My guess is that since the elephant 'garlic' is really a Leek it performs as does the show coach leeks which are notoriously slow to consolidate.

Telling a plant it is headed for the compost bin often gives it incentive to thrive ;-)

So Dave sent me some garlic cloves (left). Of course, once the Elephant garlic saw someone else doing so well, they decided to come up as well (right and back).
