I also don't fish for the biggest two - I just take the first two I can catch. Otherwise, you cause them way too much stress. If it was Salmon, you are looking at $15.00 worth of fish!!!
Well done!! My argument was exactly this with Ducca the duck. Had I more space, I would raise my own chickens and ducks for eating as I would know they were ethically raised.
Don't forget that it's both fish and veg Elaine. The veg output from an aquaponics system is usually very high for the space that the growing area occupies. Many people with aquaponics see the fish as a bonus after the veg.
Outweighing the novelty aspect (which is definitely there for me), the water saving aspect for veg production is the shining star with such a system.
Two un-filletted fish weigh only 550g! Is it really worth the effort to only get a small meal once in a while? Same question I could ask myself about the time taken, garden space used for xxx result.
I suspect with aquaponics the toy and novelty aspects outweigh any actual food produced.

Vetiver grass helps to stabilise soil and protects it against erosion. It can protect against pests and weeds. Vetiver is also used as animal feed. (Wiki.)
