Growing local

Went to harvest the first of my broccoli for dinner tonight and saw the first one. "This is weird" I thought. Looked at the other one and saw this.

F'ing RATS!!! Stopping at bunnings tonight to get the poison out.

Not a possum was it?

Bugger :( That is hugely disappointing.

What's really weird is that I am fairly rat free at the moment.

This time of year when food is scarce, rats and mice will eat anything not nailed down.

OMG, I would be so upset as well. One broccoli head would represent weeks of tending, weeks of visits and kind words and encouragement to grow! Dratted rats! I don't have anything quite as magnificent ready to harvest but I'm going to check on my peas this morning. I've seen pictures of them nibbled before as well.

Yeah Elaine, I did think better of it and got traps :). I just can’t believe they’d eat broccoli and cabbages!  I’ve never seen them do this before. Always had to watch out for my “fruiting” plants - corn, tomatoes, eggplant etc but never before have they gone for my greens.

Horrid little monsters. One ate into a Cabbage, went to harvest it and it was just empty leaves. My Border Collie at the time caught and killed the rat. She ate the rat then vomited the dead rat at my feet, as if to say 'Here's your rat!'. A pair of dead rat eyes looking up at me didn't improve the shining hour. There was no repeat performance though.

With dogs and children around, I recommend traps. Harder to set but less likely to cause permanent damage to the inhabitants of your yard.

That would get me so mad, we have a mouse plague here at the moment and the dogs are really on edge.  The rats usually eat the best parts of your harvest.

Maybe sprinkle some cayenne pepper around your other vegies.
