As you can see by the 2017 Garden Visit Calendar, we are needing more willing Members to Host GV's for the months we have not filled. It would be lovely to have a few members from the Southside of town put there hands up. Also the members up Ipswich way, we would love to come and see your garden, young or old, formal or natural it is always great to see how different people garden. If you would like to host a GV please contact Dianne via Personal Message.
Why not wait until you have some holidays Rhondda and hold it at the weekend? You will definitely get more attendees.
Some will be able to come on weekdays. Originally I held 2 visits - 1 on a weekday and 1 on a weekend. Last one there were 2 visitors and we two. So I'm settling for just one on the Sunday. Where are you located? I am well out of town which makes it difficult for many visitors anyway whatever day of the week.
I think Roger hit the nail on the head re north vs south for GV's when he mentioned that a lot of the south siders joined the Logan Garden group and started attending their GV's, not ours. Still it will be interesting to see if, now that Dianne is co-ordinating the group, more south-west gardens become featured.
definitely agree Dianne - sorry off to your favourite place again tomorrow so very bust getting everything organised for a long quiet time so havent read all the post sorry - but do feel free to see if anyone wants to do a talk here in March .
I like the relaxed atmosphere at the GVs yet I still like to be informed and entertained. There is a balance and we'll always get it right. Mainly because there is no wrong way and every GV is different as the people are different.
The change from a social outing with some gardening thrown in, is welcome but then so is the nosh-up-social itself. We need both to give scope to hosts and variation to the visitors. Folks have acreages, courtyards and suburban blocks. Everyone's garden is different, everyone's approach is different. Everyone runs their visits to the best of their ability: variety is the spice of life!
I hope that no one, especially our newer members, sees these events as some kind of competition. Mercifully, BLF has been free of competition or one-upmanship (upwomanship ;-). Coming from the cutthroat competition of the dog world, the creativity and almost meditative way we gardeners work, is a breath of more than just fresh air.
I may not get to many but I do appreciate the reports and the photos. And Andy's changing of the masthead (or whatever it is called) to highlight aspects of the current GV garden.
The Garden Visits have gone from strength to strength since the first few organised by the BLF founder, Scarlett Patrick. Then Donna took over and we had many and varied visits most often on the south side. Now and weirdly, since Lissa (north side) and Dianne (north-west?) are the convenors, most visits are on the north side. Without any conscious effort to influence the geography of the visits!
Thanks Mary-Ann, that is why I suggested that maybe one member could hold the visit but another do the Talk/Demonstration on something they are particular good at, could be Sausage Making, Beverages, Baking, Cheese Making, Compost & Worm Farming, Permaculture, Aquaponics & on & on?
Actually Lissa you are possibly right for some members but I was thinking for some of the less extroverted people if someone would volunteer or organise a talker to come in at their place could take some of the pressure off - was thinking of when Anne did that great talk at our place - took some of the pressure off what we had to show that was different
I'm hoping that the newer members who would like to have a GV, but would rather not have a talk would like to take the alternate months where we will have a GV only.
At the moment these month available for Ordinary GV's could be July, October, December. Leaving April, June, September, November for the combined GV/Talks.
These dates are not set in concrete, so if you would like to have your GV only on one of the other month that great.
I love the idea of more specific training sessions from members.
Just be aware that people who are shy and reluctant to have a mere GV will be terrified at the thought that they may be expected to produce a talk and handouts. I could be wrong, it may not put anyone off at all.
Thanks Lissa, Have fixed the link.
Dianne - you might want to check the link to Elain'es GV. It doesn't lead to the Event listing.
I am RSVP'ing "yes" to all but just be aware that if I am moving house that weekend (which will happen a lot) then it may not be possible for me to turn up.
Thank you so much Elaine and Elaine for offering to host the garden visit/wicking bed special on February 12th.
A damned fine idea Dianne! The GVs have become just a little bit of a nosh-up followed by a quick spin around the garden. All good socialising and very necessary but adding a touch of technical information (plus a brief hand out?) takes the whole event up a notch.
It is hoped that come 2017 we can value-add some of our GV's and combine them with some of the interests of the members. The way we can do this is by adding on topics, (Beekeeping, Bread Making, Preserving, Cheese Making, Wicking Bed, Compost and Worms, Aquaponics, Permaculture, Drink Making, etc.) to our GV's.
If you would like to hold a GV at your home and have a Talk, Demonstration or the like, either given by yourself or another member of the group please let me know the month you would prefer.
I would love to hear from some of the Newer Members. Enjoy the Festive Season.
Thanks Lissa, Hopefully I will find some more members who have not had GV's yet or like GayleD, who, has had quite a makeover done on her garden.
This is a great start to the year Dianne :) Well done.
Thanks Dianne.
