Growing local

Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)

As a Companion Plant

Hyssop is a tall herb that can grow up to 60cms in height. The plant has narrow long leaves and branched stems that are covered in tiny hairs at the tip. The plant produces lovely Blue flowers at the ends of the branches. The leaves have a Mint Flavour and can be added to soups and salads, the flowers are edible and can also be added to salads and used as a garnish. You can grow Hyssop from seeds from cuttings. Plants are usually available in nurseries. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep (sorry I am still and inch/foot person when it comes to plantings). Hyssop is considered as an Annual but in warmer climates will live as a Perennial for up to 5 years.

Hyssop is a good Companion Plant to Cabbage and Grapes, deterring Cabbage Moth and Flea Beatles. If planted close to Grapevines their yield will increase. Hyssop is safe to plant with other plants but is NOT a Companion for Radishes as they do not grow well with Hyssop.

Hyssop attracts both Native Bees, Honeybees and Butterflies and makes a great natural insect repellent, and also repels the Cabbage Moth Larvae. Rubbing a Beehive with Hyssop will help Bees find and return to the hive.

Mint and Hyssop is said to repel Slugs which will, in turn, help your Lettuce and Cabbage flourish.

If Hyssop deters Flea Beetles, it would be a good companion for Eggplant which is often plagued with little chomping critters.

I have a lot of slugs and Tramp snails around the place at the moment.

Hyssop is certainly a beautiful way to deter the baddies and encourage the goodies.
