am so glad you had a good time. very sorry i wasn't there. drat. didn't go to the oxley one either. sounds like you all had heaps of seeds and interesting varieties this time (thanks for your blogging fiona!). yes florence, you should start blogging, would love to read about your endeavours! so now i have artichoke, parsley and broccoli seeds that need a home. i'll keep them for next time, i hope it's not too far away. maybe could meet at christopher's open morning?

Just reiterating all over this forum - the meeting of minds for international seed swapping day of action was BRILLIANT. Thanks Donna, for organising. I am excited!

Well we had a very successful second meeting, without thunderstorms and rain this time! Five members turned up to Roma St Parklands and shared a pretty good variety of seeds - I even still have surplus!

Hi Lucien, hope you got the settings right - I can never find them when I look for them to adjust them. Normally I have to rely on the front page to see what activity there has been :)

Hi Trinette - great - you have given me hope for success in the shade and in the soil... AND i reckon i can afford the sugar cane mulch, so that is great - now I just have to get some gypsum as well, and I will be laughing (after some elbow grease)! It is just so lovely to be getting rain too.

Hi Fiona, welcome. I also have very clay soil where I am renting in Loganholme. I have found that by adding sugar cane mulch consistently for about 18 months I have noticebly improved the quality of the soil. It is a slow process but I have still managed to grow in in it the meanwhile. Tomatoes, beans, herbs, corn and more have come from my crappy soil. I usually buy a bale from the local nursery or bunnings for around $13.00 but its quite compact and lasts me for ages.
As for shady spots, I have a garden at my work on the gold coast that hardly gets any sun at all. I have had success with silverbeet, celery, beans (not much fruit yet but bushes are nice and healthy and just starting to get flowers) and basil. I read that in the shade you generally have more success with veggies that you grow for the leaf and not for the fruit. So I guess lettuce and salad greens would do well also but I have yet to try. Good luck, look forward to sharing stories with you

Thanks Florence. I was also wondering whether to build a small raised vege patch - especially if I can get hold of some free or cheap bricks or other materials to contain the bed - that may help too.

Hi Fiona, I’ve read that Gypsum would break down clay soil, and you should be able to get them from any garden centres if your budget allows. Maybe try with a small area to minimise the cost? Other wise, I guess just keep piling on organic matters when they are available..

Thanks a bundle Donna! Especially since you have sand and sun!
