Growing local

Anyone else growing waterchestnut and can confirm that they are ready to crop?

My blurb says dead and yellowing foliage and this is how mine looks at the moment. First time I've grown it.

Yeah should be ready.  Pick up the whole clump by the reeds and have a look at the bottom - the black knobs are the water chestnuts.  They're a bit tricky to process and I'm not sure they're entirely worth the effort.  Use a potato peeler to get the skin off. Have fun!

I didn't peel the ones given to me last year, just cut them thin and added them skin and all to whatever I was cooking. They did keep for a long time in the fridge. Fibre = good ;) .....or I could just be getting lazy.

Do you replant yours immediately from this years crop?

Wasn't sure what the skin would be like.  I'll bear that in mind for next time.  They do store well, although occasionally one or two will go rotten in the fridge.

I've never needed to replant them because I find that I always miss some in the pond and I don't completely clean it out so they just resprout.  You can either replant now or at the end of winter, just keeping them in the fridge in the mean time.

Ok, that's interesting. I was going to empty the pot out completely and rummage through the mess collecting tubers and then start the process over again with new soil. But if you find they just come up again by themselves I might just dig around with my hands and replenish a bit.

They like manure don't they ?
