Brisbane Local Food

Growing local

There's a lot of green stuff out there that I don't like. I like kale but am not so keen on spinach -- most spinaches and beets.

But then there it Katuk -- Sweet Leaf - Sauropus androgynus.

I can't understand why this plant isn't raved about.  Extremely tasty. Easy to grow. Will strike readily from cuttings.  I have about 15 bushes as my original 5 couldn't feed my addiction...and I'm gardening on near beach sand.

I throw it into any number of dishes...and my preference is Turkish cuisine so I'm also using it instead of English style spinach.

I get stock from some folk at the Caboolture Markets: $2.00. You may have to order it a week ahead as they don't always  bring  struck cuttings  every week,

Kale in Winter. Katuk in Summer. What more do I need?

Since it is a small tree (and you eat the leaves by stripping them like a keen locust) it warrants comparison to Moringa oliferia, the Drumstick Tree -- but I much prefer the taste of Katuk.

I don't like Moringa at all.

Absolute essential garden addition I reckon.

I got excited about this after reading about it in Annette Mcfarlane's Organic Vegetable Growing book. I've only tasted leaves that I snuck from plants or cuttings at markets, but it seemed a bit tough for me. Is  it somewhat tough, or have I just tried old leaves?

Old leaves.younger ones are like salad greens.

Mine never impressed me I'm afraid. It's still growing out there but I've never found the flavour to my taste - I prefer the silverbeets! so I suppose it's something in our taste buds.
