Growing local

During my dawn walks along the foreshore of the Pumicestone Passage I have met some wonderful people. Most don't go beyond a familiar face, a cheery smile and a "good morning" but two people in particular have become real friends. Beryl with her gorgeous dog Gemma and Joseph.

Joseph is an 84yrs young Hungarian gent. He walks most mornings rugged up to the eyeballs against the brisk dawn weather with his wheely walker, just for safety sake not because he really needs it. 

Joseph is very, very independent. He still drives. Goes to the bowls club every few months for a whisky and beer chaser (and drives). He also makes his own Hungarian sausage using actual pig intestines for the casing, minces all his own pork and fresh garlic, uses good Hungarian hot Paprika and other spices. Then smokes them in his home made (from two old washing machines?? haven't seen it in the flesh) smoker.

Joseph tells me he also makes his own pasta, egg noodles, pickles and other goodies. All taught to him by his Mother before he turned 13.

I should have taken a photo of Joseph and will try to rectify this shortfall...but here are his sausages generously shared with me. All carefully cryovac'd.

He warned me they were well salted to his taste. Too much for me but my Dad will love some. The dark one on the right has been double smoked.

Lovely story.  It's great that he is still able to do things that he loves and that connect him to his roots.  I can see why you want to live in Bribie from those photos - what a peaceful, beautiful way to start the day. 

Thank you for the delightful story Lissa! Joseph shows why it is important to stay active and connected in old age (he's the same age as my partner). Drooling for those sausages ;-)

Love the photos of Bribie - it is a favourite place and you've captured the essence of the early morning.

You are still an early morning person, Lissa.  Great photos, we easily forget how lovely Bribie is at times.  Those sausages would be tasty. Thanks for sharing.
