I have three "Cypress Hill" pomegranate plants to give away. I have really struggled to find information on the variety online, but that's what it was labelled at the (random) nursery I bought the first one at.
I've picked my first fruit this year (after last year's crop of two fruit were eaten by possums or bats or rats), so I finally have a sense of what they are like. Unfortunately they're not really what I was looking for. The arils and juice are pink, whereas I like a really blood red, vampyric pomegranate. The juice is also quite sweet and subtle, whereas I love a tart pomegranate juice with a strong flavour. I'm looking to get a rosavaya or Azerbaijani variety, if anyone has one of those.
The tree seems to have a pretty standard growth habit. I had some problems with the leaves growing twisted and a bit stunted for the first couple of summers but the stems were fine and it sorted itself out with no problems this year. It seems that the fruit do need some fruit fly protection, as some of my fruit were stung this year. There were a few larvae wiggling around inside the fruit, but mostly fruit fly attack seems to create dead patches inside the fruit.
Anyway, I'm in Annerley and I'm happy to have someone pick the plants up. I have two that were air layered and one cutting grown (see pictures).
