Very interesting presentation.  I did a little bit of research here to find out more about it.   It seems that using thorium as a nuclear fuel has been researched for many years and is still ongoing, but it still requires a lot more work and investment. 

Summary of article in the link:

"The use of thorium as a new primary energy source has been a tantalizing prospect for many years. Extracting its latent energy value in a cost-effective manner remains a challenge, and will require considerable R&D investment."


Interesting points:  Australia has the worlds  most known thorium (19%).  India has made using thorium as an energy source a major goal.
