Event Description

SUNDAY 25TH JUNE AT 10AM – 77 FLAXTON MILL RD, FLAXTON

Local organic gardening expert and author Jeffrey Hodges has kindly invited us to visit his garden at Flaxton.

Jeffrey has more than 40yrs practical gardening experience. He studied agricultural science, has degrees in Environmental Studies and Social Ecology but most importantly has a great deal of experience in gardening in SEQ.  Jeffrey worked and studied at the Findhorn community in Scotland and refined and adapted their methods to suit Australian conditions.

Jeffrey has been a guest speaker on commercial radio and written numerous articles and books on organic gardening including THE ORGANIC GARDENNATURAL GARDENING IN AUSTRALIATHE WATER WISE GARDEN.

Preface to The Organic Garden: This is a book for gardeners of the heart. In you're only interested in results - in growing huge tomatoes or giant cabbages - then perhaps it won't impress you. If, however, you've ever gazed in awe at the beauty of the early morning dew glistening on your first poppy in spring; if you've watched with humility and wonder as the tiny seeds you planted last week burst through the surface of the soil to lift their first little leaves to the sun; if you truly love plants......then this book is for you.

From Jeffrey:

Re "terrain" my place is flat around to the vege garden with concrete paths so should not be a problem.  Re car parking, there is a space for maybe three cars on my property but ample space on footpaths on both sides of the road.

Yes I can have some books for sale if people are interested.

PLEASE NOTE RE TOILET AMENITIES:

Jeffrey’s home doesn't have amenities for a large group (one small ensuite only) - please visit the public amenities in Montville at 159 Main Street (5mins before you get to Jeffrey's place).

MORNING TEA 10am:

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MUG AND FOOD TO SHARE.

I will bring tea, coffee, sugar and milk.

LUNCH 12.30pm:

WE WILL HAVE LUNCH OUT FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT - PLEASE PROVIDE NUMBERS SO I CAN MAKE A BOOKING.

Mapleton Tavern - Cnr Obi Obi & Montville/Mapleton Rd, Mapleton.

Please be aware that it is school holiday time and it will be busy. Orders can be placed and paid for individually.

CARPOOLING IS ENCOURAGED. If you have room for others, or need a lift, please specify your location and numbers.

Jeffreys plant was covered in flower (very pretty) and developing fruit but he did mention that it flowered for a long time before it started to develop fruit. Be patient and don't give up hope.

what an awesome day we missed again !sounds like everyone rally enjoyed themselves and learn a lot - did anyone ask about growing banana passionfruit - we have got ours to flower I have hand pollinated but the flowers all just drop off and no sign of fruit - was advised by fellow gardeners that t is just not cold enough - any ideas?

Thanks so much Jeffery for having us to visit your garden. Graham and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in the garden as well as the Historical Graves on your property, they are so beautifully and well kept. Did love the taste of your Oranges.

Thanks must also go to Lissa for arranging for the visit and lunch at the tavern.

I will PM some photos to you now.

No worries Julie, it was a pleasure :) I have been missing out on so many GV's recently that it was wonderful for me to get out with the group and talk plants.

If you took any photos that you would like included in the report (see the Garden Visit group discussion) please message them to me.

Mango Hill looks fine for getting to work btw. Look forward to hearing from about dates.

Thank you Jeffrey for sharing your garden with us. I especially loved the Banana Passionfruit, and how special to have a piece of local history in your front garden. Thanks to everyone else who came too. We enjoyed your company!

Thank you to all who came along and enjoyed the morning with Jeffrey. Such a relaxed man and happy to learn new ideas from us as well as share his own.

Once I figure out how to get the photos off my new camera (it's refusing to load them on it's own) I will do a write up. Cathy and anyone else who took photos - could you message the best of them to me please for inclusion. Thank you.

Hi Everyone, Don't forget to bring your name badge along, if you have the one Graham gave you. See you all Sunday. Should be a good day, thanks so much for organizing this one Lissa.

Late comers will also be welcome. Just give me a ring and let me know your numbers for lunch in case I have to increase the booking.

Are you all aware of the address for the venue? It is at the top of the listing (above) along with a link and address for the lunch venue. Please note both before you head off.

My mobile number is at the top also (0414445581) - I would suggest you put it in your phone before you leave.
