Sustainable Building Design

Chris Rew

9.30 am

Christopher Rew is an Eco-Building Designer based at Mapleton. He has a degree in Architecture from the University of Sydney and has been designing and building energy efficient homes since 1988. He lived at Crystal Waters Permaculture Village for ten years, designing and helping to build, a wide range of eco-friendly homes there, as well as numerous rammed earth houses throughout S.E. Queensland. His “butterfly” house at Witta won the BDA Environmental Design Award for Queensland in 2001 and featured on Solar-House Open Day.

More recently he has developed a range of tropical style, eco-homes based on a unique curved timber truss. These designs, known as “TropEco”, have evolved to incorporate 25 years of eco-design experience. They use modular design principles, and common sense solutions that aim to create climatically appropriate homes, supporting client’s decisions to live more sustainably.

Chris’s presentation will empower participants by using a common sense approach to:

  • explore the underlying principles that affect human comfort
  • demonstrate the properties of thermal mass and insulation
  • look at the use of passive and active solar/thermal systems.
  • discuss options for water collection and effluent disposal.
  • explain the differences between embodied energy and life cycle energy.

Chris will then be open for questions and discussion regarding eco-house design ideas and specific situations.

For those who are interested, a short presentation of TropEco – Living Simply Projects designs – will be available at the conclusion of the main presentation.
