12th August – Spilling the Beans: Coffee Growing & Processing at Home with Phillip Richards (9.30 am)

In the workshop Phillip Richards will discuss growing the coffee bush and demonstrate the simple procedures involved in processing your own coffee using simple, inexpensive methods and materials. Participants will handle examples of the beans from all stages of processing. You will experience how it looks, how it feels, and how it smells and, if you are very lucky, how it tastes. Coffee can be grown quite successfully here on the Sunshine Coast.

Phillip has been growing coffee in Yandina for twelve years. A writer, he has published articles on sustainability topics such as coffee growing and – recently – making guava vinegar, and recycling, removing and re-siting houses. Formally an organic vegetable farmer (Childers, BFA certified), and a teacher in NSW and on the Sunshine Coast, he lives on a small acreage beside the Maroochy River. In a garden full of birds, bees, trees and a few cooks, he and Louise grow all their own fruit vegetables as well as enough coffee for regular cups.

Cost: $5 Non-Members, Gold coin for Members, Free to Regular Volunteers

Duration 1.5-2 hours. Bookings are NOT required.

we have a couple of coffee trees and as neither of us drink it we just eat the beans when they are ripe - both trees produced this year and they are under two years in the ground with about 30 beans between them. thy are in the food forest mainly as part of the middle storey so get some shade but also shade the smaller plants - very vigorous growers - not quite as good as the jabotacaba though

Wayne and Lynn at Dayboro have one productive tree in their front yard and, from past conversations, they turn them into drinkable coffee.

They plant the coffee bushes out in the rain Forrest mixed in with native trees so would be possible to plant out in the bush.

No loose ends for me at the weekends Elaine - quite the opposite these days. I move at the weekends, visit my parents, grandson, kids, friends doctor and other appointments and try to fit in the odd gardening thing.

I get automatically entered as attending these workshops when I list them - I don't drink coffee and won't be attending, sorry ladies. No answers to your questions unless someone else goes along.

It will be interesting to learn how many bushes we'd need to supply our needs. More I suspect than I'd have room for.

This workshop sounds very interesting, unfortunately I won't be able to attend.  Coffee is an expensive commodity and learning the correct way to roast these beans at the right stage with the right temperatures, is worth learning.

Phillip Richards sounds like a person with a lot of knowledge.
