BLITZIN' A BACKYARD

Saturday, 10 October 2010, 9:00am - 5:00pm
On 10th October, 2010 for 350.org's Global Work Party we'll be getting a crew of people together to get their hands dirty in a PERMABLITZ in West End.

We'll be preparing garden beds and swales, building a worm farm and water tank stand - there'll be a communal vegetarian meal & new friends to meet, so bring a trowel, cardboard or old newspapers & a smile!

Get on down to a permablitz this weekend in West End. There'll be workshops and fun galore. We'll be preparing garden beds and swales, building a worm farm and water tank stand - there'll be a communal vegetarian meal & new friends to meet, so bring a trowel, cardboard or old newspapers & a smile!

1 x galvanised 3mm mesh 50-100mm grid, sheet 1.8m x 1.2m
chook wire, not snake wire (too fine)

Water tank base:
3 x treated sleepers
2 x bags compactable soil eg. road base

Greywater:
diversion valve
polypipe

Wormfarm:
bathtub
1 x bucket of bluestone
2m shade-cloth
worms - pete
signage – madelaine?
3-10 litre collection bucket
wooden or brick support frame
1 x bag wood shavings for bedding - steph
2m carpet/hessian cover

Paths:
~50 small lengths of pliable bamboo
sawdust or woodchip

Garden beds:
Manure and straw
Logs for the boarder of garden beds

Plants:
banana suckers
papaya
arrowroot
ginger
comfrey
marigolds
annual herbs

Painting toilets and signs:
Paints
Water proof boards to paint on for worm farm instructions

Tools:
angle-grinder
stanley knife
shovels
wheelbarrows
Vans and/or utes

GrowVetiver

Vetiver grass helps to stabilise soil and protects it against erosion.  It can protect against pests and weeds. Vetiver is also used as animal feed. (Wiki.)

GrowVetiver is a plant nursery run by Dave & Keir Riley that harvests and grows Vetiver grass for local community applications and use. It is based in Beachmere, just north of Brisbane, Australia.
