Event Description

We're off to visit Karla (Wally) at her garden in Whiteside (just outside Petrie on the road to Dayboro).

We started work on our three and a half acre property at Whiteside (just past Petrie on the way to Dayboro) 14 years ago.

Over the last 5 years, we have been extending our productive gardens and we try to be as sustainable as possible.  We are ¾ of the way through completion of our chook house (it was a little larger than it looked on paper), and we now have ‘Walter the Wonderful’ with his bevy of 16 hens of various breeds.

We have slowly been adding a range of edible plants such as loquat, avocados, assorted citrus, paw paw,  babaco, coffee, banana, sea grape, moringa, curry tree, fig, guava, panama berry, malay apple, johnstone river apple, sweet leaf tree, pineapples, tamarind, chokoes, dragon fruit, turmeric, ginger, yacon, nashi pear, pecan, tamarind.

We have numerous raised vegie beds.

An aquaponics system is our latest development – housing 100 jade perch and a variety of vegies. Our newly developed soldier fly farm to feed both fish and chickens is also working well.

The house and vegie area is reasonably flat; the terrain leading down to the orchard, chook pen and aquaponics does have a considerable slope to get down, but once you are there it is flat.

We will put a campfire on for smoko and cook up some damper and scones in the coals. Free bush turkey to take home for the kiddies with every visitor.

Address has been sent to those who RSVP 'd. Late attendees welcome - please RSVP to give us accurate numbers. Message Lissa for the address.
Children welcome but must be supervised by their parents.
Please bring a small plate of food / drink to share and any excess produce, seed, plants etc that you want to swap, giveaway or sell.

Incredible morning visit! None of us wanted to leave Karla and Bruce's little bit of heaven. After 13yrs + of plugging away their garden has pretty much everything anyone could want in it. Bees coming soon. Thank you both so much for a magical morning mooching around together in the delicious rain.

I promise to start a report thread soon (if Lissa hasn't already done so).

Love to be at Karla's how wonderful something everywhere to see, the rain was not a deterrent , brollies even looked good travelling through the garden with keen gardeners underneath them. Having morning tea on the deck looking down and over the vast garden moist with rain, the sights and smells that rain brings ......... wonderful.

I have Cranberry Hibiscus cuttings for anyone who would like some also (thank you to Muriel for asking for them).

Don't let the bit of rain put you off, you keen gardeners! Wear some wet weather gear or bring a brollie.

Sorry Karla, would have loved to come but I agreed to take on an exchange student and she will be here only for that weekend so we are doing "aussie" stuff with her all weekend.

There's a bucket of Comfrey root cuttings most of which will grow. Bring some plastic bags if you want some.

I also have some organic Oat and Barley seeds either for sprouting or for animal feed. And some vege seeds.

I haven't had time to plant any seedlings or cuttings, but I will bring chillies to share and Pepinos for everyone to try for morning tea. I must start making some extra Kombucha for these GV days too, bit late now.
